* The Unofficial “Official” Chelsea v Boro - Carabao Cup SF [2nd leg] Match-Night Thread *

Stuff you lot. I’m off to watch Bob Mortimer reruns on WILTY

We lost.

That is how we play.

Pointless and hopeless trying to adopt a whole new ethos for one game against better opponents. We’re playing a system for the team we want to become…

You can't just lump it either without an outlet, it's just as careless.

I'm not sure it is though. It might not have been as pretty to watch but I think playing it into the channels and maybe trying to use Rogers pace against a 39 year old could have been effective and stopped us conceding about 4 of those goals.

I'm a hundred percent behind the way we play generally but tonight I knew beforehand that playing out from the back would be very dangerous. It wouldn't take any coaching for players to play the ball into the channels and go direct, they'll have all played that way before.

I love Carrick he's the best thing to happen to Boro in donkeys years but he's not infallible. We got it wrong tonight.

That dream turned into a nightmare.
Time to wake up then.
Back to the real world.
Work in the morning.
A weekend off
It won't be too long before we put 7 past Sunderland in our next game.

In theory, far more likely is that we just end up giving the ball away each time and running our players further into the ground chasing lost causes.

If we had a fully fit squad with options from the bench, I could understand this a bit more, but we don’t.

They managed pretty well in the first leg and the goals weren't just down to them Hackney sold Barlaser down the swanny for one, Howson and VDB score OGs. The difference was the intensity of the Chelsea players and their pace to close down quickly
Intensity is the one thing we don’t have, Saturday was a big example of our lack of intensity. We are so one paced at times and spend time passing the ball around at the back and across midfield, allowing the opposition to regroup.

The likes of clarke and fry are not suited to the slide rule pass out from the back thats my whole point

They are not suited to hoofball either and neither is the rest of the squad.

Imaging an alternative reality where your opinion is a better option doesn't make it so. We could just as easily have been battered just the same.

No doubt with many then making the reverse criticism.

We gave a chelsea team low in confidence gift after gift we gave it to them on a plate. A more pragmatic approach and we wouldn't have got such a thumping

Says who? Imagination?

The same Chelsea players also had over a week off to prepare and are professional footballers.

We are also a team battered by injuries and running on fumes.

Haven't they just won 8 out of 9 at home?
We can debate tactics all night but I'm not sure anyone really thinks a change in style would have resulted in a win? Massive gulf in class did for us tonight.

A loss is a loss in the cup, no goal difference and ultimately no difference between a scrappy 1-0 or a 6-0 battering.

Carrick’s only mistake tonight was playing Crooks as an attacker, out of his depth, no pace and can’t hold up the ball, but not many other options. The Howson sort of sweeper role may have worked, indeed he got back for the first goal and was unlucky to score an own goal. Most things first half came down our left, something we’ve seen Championship clubs target this season. Always felt they under estimated us first leg and didn’t do their homework, learnt their lesson for the second leg. Great to see us in a major semi final again, at 54 don’t expect many more the way the game is going.

It's this the same Chelsea who haven't lost at home for six games. Is that the Chelsea you mean.

We played the same way on the first leg and no one complained we played the same against villa and no one complained.

Please stop. We played a very good side who's class showed. They didn't miss a single chance tonight. Their xg was 3 which is probably a more realistic goals against than 6.they were clinical tonight.

Should have either played coburn or forss as the striker and he keeps going back to crooks as a striker I’ll never know why he does that,it wouldn’t have made result much different like,I genuinely thought we would have signed a striker but it appears not so.next season it is then,as I don’t feel we have enough for the playoffs this season unfortunately

Playing out from the back is what we do. To swap and change this because it doesn’t work occasionally is not the way forward. You either commit it 100% or you find a different way to play. I am fully behind this and it will win us more games than we lose. Too many dinosaurs about shouting for us to ‘just get rid of it’. Didn’t work tonight but we do exactly the same against Sunderland please.
So you're saying that a team should only ever have one way of playing? That they should never, ever try to adapt and use different tactics when their normal style of play clearly isn't working? That they should only ever have a plan A and never a plan B? Sorry, but I don't agree with, or believe in that point of view.
