What it means to get to Wembley!

Wembley is going to be rocking and it appears a few Owls have already arrived in the Capital - with pictures of them savouring the delights of Covent Garden last night. Their come-back against play-off rivals Peterborough on penalties was amazing. From a 4-0 battering at London Road, Wednesday rose to the challenge at Hillsbro` winning 5-3 on penalties. Barnsley have their own history of play-off triumphs and have a habit of bouncing back from adversity. Last season they finished rock-bottom of the Championship. This season they finished in the play-offs, then beat Bolton Wanderers to get to the Wembley Final.

Barnsley

Head Coach: Michael Duff

Since their brief flirtation with the Premier League [97/98] Barnsley have experienced both highs and lows. Over that period they have experienced relegation four times and promotion three. From the Prem to the old League One [now the Championship] then down to the third tier - and back again. Last time they were promoted to the Championship was at the end of the 2018/19 season when they finished 2nd. In the 20/21 season, they reached the 5th Round of the FA Cup and the 3rd Round of the League Cup. Their leading scorer that season was one Cauley Woodrow with 12 goals.

He left Oakwell in 2022 to join his original club, Luton Town. We know what happened to them.

Following relegation just over a year ago, Oakwell saw 18 players leave and seven new players arrive on free transfers with a further six for undisclosed fees. Seven loan players also joined the club - including Bobby Thomas from Burnley and Josh Martin from Norwich.

Sheffield Wednesday

Head Coach: Darren Moore

Its been 23 years since Wednesday were relegated from the Premiership. The club boasted players such as Mark Bright, Chris Waddle, Paolo Di Canio, Damien Hirst, Andy Booth and Benito Carbone.

They have experienced a chequered history since, mostly in the Championship with 5 seasons in the third tier in total. Darren Moore has steadied the on-field side and last season finished 4th. They eventually lost out 2-1 in the play-offs to Sunderland. This season, it was a close call, with Ipswich pipping then to second automatic place by two points - 10 above Barnsley. There`s a few well-known names amongst the first team squad. Notably Josh Windass [Son of former Boro favourite Dean Windass], Michael Smith [Much sort after striker who signed from Rotherham] and Liam Palmer - Wednesdays longest serving player.

Apart from a brief loan spell early in his career, he has spent the entirety of his career since 2010 with the Owls. In total he has made 348 appearances.

Season Highlights 22/23:
Sheffield Wednesday 2 Sunderland 0 [Carabao Cup]
Sheffield Wednesday 2 Ipswich 2 [September]
Sheffield Wednesday 2 Newcastle United 0 [FA Cup 3rd Round]
Sheffield Wednesday 5 MK Dons 2 [February]
Sheffield Wednesday 1 Peterborough 0 [March]

This is a different play off final to the Championship one, in that I would like both Barnsley and Sheffield Wed to win (whereas in the other……😩). As the team playing in red have one the others, I will plump for Barnsley as I lived there for a couple of years in the 1970s.

No doubt Wednesday are favourites, but Barnsley shouldnt be under-estimated.
They`ve built almost a whole new team in just one season.
They have some good young players who might cope better with extra time - if it comes to that.(y)

I reckon that there will be many an argument over whether they should be called South Yorkshire teams or are they really from the West Riding, as it was when they played proper football.

Indeed.
"Riding" is deriven from old Norse, meaning "three parts".
Not sure if Leeds would like it mind(y)

"Higgy" played not only in a Boro shirt, but for Barnsley between 1998 and 2000. He scored 35 goals in 77 appearances!

Taylor’s Auntie Tracy added: ‘I couldn’t believe it when I got the call from Amy at Reds in the Community to tell me Taylor would be receiving this fantastic opportunity, I was driving home from work, and I cried the entire journey’

Taylor’s Uncle added:
‘I am lost for words at the generosity to make this happen, this is an experience Taylor will never forget and I send out so much gratitude to everyone that made this happen.’

Head of Foundation at Reds in the Community Kieron Campbell said: ‘I would like to thank the EFL for giving us the opportunity to make this happen. Seeing Taylor’s reaction reminds me of why we do what we do within the Barnsley Community. A well deserving participant and an experience to remember’

Everyone at Reds in the Community and Barnsley FC hope that Taylor has a fantastic time and we will catch-up with her soon to hear all about it!

Poor ticket sales from Barnsley.

I think it's probably best for us if Barnsley win as Wednesday more likely to challenge towards the top of the league in the champo.

Likely that Barnsley will improve in the coming season. A group of players chucked together last August - can only get better.

As for us - Wednesday would bring a bigger crew to the Riverside and I`ve not got particularly fond memories of our matches at Oakwell ;@((
