* The South Yorkshire Play-Off Final: Owls v Tykes at Wembley Match-Day Thread *

The ref had to give a yellow and if wrong upgrade it to a red through VAR if necessary but game has been spoilt.
I disgaree. The ref has to referee as he sees it. Trying to second guess via VAR changes the game even more.

The ref gives a red as from his position he hasn't seen exactly how the contact was made. The studs up were away from the player and the swing of the leading leg was never towards the player he collided with. Not dangerous in my opinion. VAR should have asked the ref to look. They've made a decision that they're not supposed to make.

It should work like rugby in that sort of case the referee says - "I'd like to look at that please - my initial impression is dangerous play and red card"

It is then shown on the big screen and the officials discuss it with the audio available. For those watching at home.

I still think it wouldn't have been overturned - Philips had no control of his right leg as both are off the floor - him making contact with that leg is irrelevant.

Barnsley deserve to go through. Even with one player less, they have been the side more interested in scoring. Can't see them hanging on for another 30 minutes with only ten men though.

It should be binned as another failed experiment, but if we have to keep it then I agree that they need to learn from other sports and stop with all the secrecy.

The red might not have been overturned but VAR should have told the ref to take another look. There was enough 'grey-area' for it to be checked.

I think his leading leg was far enough away from making any sort of contact that the control issue is laregely irrelevent.

You could do a Deano anywhere on the pitch where there were no other players present and you wouldn't be carded for being out of control. It's the proximity that matters and there was never any danger (or intention) of actual contact.

Barnsley, particularly their keeper, has been heroic. If they manage to get through this it will be a minor miracle.

That Harry Isted keeper for Barnsley on loan from Luton looks brilliant we should take him to replace steffen

Hes been out on loan for the last 6 years from Luton - in non league, until he joined Barnsley.
