I'm not bothered what position the penalty taker plays. Should be someone who can deal with the pressure and strikes the ball cleanly.

What is more important that there is a clear penalty taker and a deputy. In the event that both of those players aren't on the pitch for whatever reason, the captain should be taking control of the situation.

Either it hasn't been clear who the penalty taker is and in that case Carrick should have had it sorted. Or one of Greenwood/Lath have gone rogue and Carrick wants to give them a boot up the hole

Obviously correct, there's been some great penalty takers over the years who were defenders (never mind midfielders) . Someone has already mentioned Steve Bruce, but also David Usworth, Leighton Baines, Julian Dicks, Ian Harte, Dennis Irwin, Fernando Hierro, Sergio Ramos. Even a couple of south American keepers (Chilavert?).

And some strikers who weren't great at them. Don't think Owen was the best was he? Andy Cole never liked taking them.

Obviously on average a striker should be better at them, but doesn't always follow. A lot of strikers are outstanding instinctive finishers. Give them time to think however......

If I was a striker I'd be mad for it though. I don't think Akpom was the best at them, never massively convinced with his technique, but his confidence was high and he was desperate for goals. As the best strikers are.

Julian Dicks, Irwin and Harte instantly come to mind when I think of penalty takers too.

It might have been nothing other than a normal 'well done', but it looked as if Carrick gave a Lath a hug and had a little word in his ear when he came off, in my furtive imagination it was an 'I know mate, you should have took it'. Unfortunately I can't lip read mild mannered Geordie.

For the record the penalty taker list should be well defined and known pre-game. Arguing about who takes the penalty when it's given only adds unnecessary pressure.

Yup it was, sailed over my head. Slaven grabbed it, as soon as the pen was awarded. I think Wilkinson was our regular pen taker at the time and there was a discussion before he skied it. Spot yourself?

There are just as many articles out there that describe him as an attacking midfielder/second striker/winger/forward. The original point stands, you can't really say Akpom and Forss aren't strikers.

Forss is the only one of our players I’m confident taking penalties, as he’s injured it’s a bit of a toss up. Thought at the time Greenwood took it to boost his confidence, which obviously it didn’t! Next one has to go to Latte!

I agree, I know Carrick likes to give responsibility to the players on many things but I think this is one aspect that is important and needs clarity for the players. A penalty taker and a replacement if the normal player is off the field

I think it probably shows that taking a good pen is as much about mentality as it is about technique.

Agree about Akpom btw.

Yakubu is the best I've seen for Boro, made and art of waiting for keepers to move, which is far more common these days.

I am glad he missed!!!! I had £2 on jones to score first in a 2-0 win on Bet365. I assumed the bet was a bust when the OG went in. as surprised to find an extra £80 in the account after the game. I assume OG's don't count on Bet365?. It seems Jones was given the 2nd despite the deflection. Well Done Greenwood for missing and may he go back to his parent club as soon as possible.
