* The Original Unofficial "Official" Boro v West Brom. Match-Day Thread *

I'll tell you what is interesting. The QPR matchday thread had 11 pages. This thead is on 18 pages. Makes you think, doesn't it.

Probably because last week game was at home and most posters where at the match. 15 pages are before or in match comments with only 3 after game finished.

Exactly, the first opportunity to have an onslaught over a defeat etc, we have been superb recently through a run of games where most half empty fans would of said typically Boro we will get beat blah blah, we created our own problem today and then couldnt break a structured team down yet having all the ball, we move on, every team will drop points we just have to keep doing what we have been and we will be fine, whether its second, third or 6th the team has been superb since carrick took over, perspective and a calm attitude is needed.
Never heard that phrase "half empty fans" but I like it, might borrow it

Firmly second best today against a team we could yet face in the play offs. The balance is of course we have played exceptionally well in recent weeks so the WBA game is hopefully a blip and we get back into the swing on Saturday against a poor Reading side. Small niggle in the back of the mind though is that when we get beat we do get ‘well beat’ not a hammering but Burnley, Sunderland and WBA were games we were soundly second best (accepting the influence of the Fry Red Card against the Makams). Clearly we can come back against better teams, Sheff Utd being the most recent example but we can have a pretty smelly day now and again. That can’t be allowed to happen in the play offs. Still confident we can secure a play off place and from there promotion.

Playoffs is a complete lottery and anything can happen, form goes out the window

This whole playoff is a lottery is a complete myth.

The team finishing 3rd wins the playoffs 60%of the time. If it was a lottery they would win it 25%of the time.

That's from 2019, before the play-offs..

Since then the winners were:

2019 - Aston Villa (5th)
2020 - Fulham (4th)
2021 - Brentford (3rd)
2022 - Nottingham Forest (4th)

Not sure where you've got 60% from.

Yes. So we should have changed what we were doing. But we didn't/couldn't.
Carrick has a philosophy he chooses to stick to that in the belief that if we play how we train it will more likely succeed then by scrapping it and pumping it forward. You have to trust the system

I have to disagree with some - I didn't think there was much difference between the two teams. 12 shots each. 70% possession for us and 8 to 4 on corners to us. Different to the last two defeats at Sunderland and Burnley where we were second best on the stats.

We were much better at passing and inteception, winning more corners and putting in more crosses, particularly in the first half.

WBA at the beginning of the game showed a better cutting edge. They were also excellent at keeping their shape throughout the whole game and defending solidly when they needed to. Very Coberan.

For me we have to take more risks near the oppositions box. I felt there was a few times we could have had a pop at goal when 20 yards out or played a few early crosses in when WBA were not full organised.

I was disappointed with Steffan for their second goal he can do better I am sure.

Wallace and Swift showed their (expensive) class for the WBA goals.

From the years of 2005 to 2015.

In an article from 2017 claiming to represent the last 10 seasons, but the teams in 4th and 5th won promotion in the 2 most recent seasons at that point which the author randomly excluded.

The play-offs have been a thing since 1987 too.
I didn't expect it to include all. I did expect it to be consecutive sessions. Are you telling me it doesn't? If that's the case it's terrible.

We started well I thought but the worry was from this game that we were always sideways on and we couldn’t find either Archer or Forss in forward positions. If we make the playoffs I just hope we don’t have to play WBA, as they definitely overpowered us both in defence and attack.

Perhaps our subs were made too late as it was clear from the 50th minute that we couldn’t generate anything from midfield. McGree and Howson were constantly on their heels and therefore forever they couldn’t settle.

The two goals were avoidable but Dike really bullied and pushed our defence throughout the game, which definitely disrupted our game plan, as both Giles and Smith had to hang back too much.

I wouldn’t say it was a good learning experience either as we gained absolutely nothing from losing and the way we lost.

It is consecutive seasons, but I don't think it's a coincidence that an article written to show that finishing 3rd is a huge advantage in the play-offs deliberately excluded the two most recent seasons where 3rd didn't win it and included two seasons from further back where they did.

It's obviously not a complete lottery, the team in 3rd is usually the 3rd best team in the league and will win more than the team that finished 6th, but it's more akin to cup football than the league.
