Michael Carrick is probably one of the biggest problems for Boro right now. Not only has he had the best start of any Boro Manager in our 147 year history, but hes attracting the attention of the media and football across Europe. With 13 victories, 1 draw and only three defeats - only Barcelona in the top five European Football Countries have done better than Middlesbrough. Five wins out of the last five, with Boro scoring three goals in four - and two against Watford.

We found it tough against QPR: they came to put up a fight, and in the first half they succeeded. We gave Sheffield United a lesson in "class" on their home turf and took all three away from Cardiff. Blackpool came to give us a test, but were sent home pointless. The same Watford team who beat West Brom 3-2 earlier this week: we dispatched without conceding a goal - in spite of their strong forward line. Not forgetting team spirit, we have goals coming from all over the park, not just from Championship Top Scorer Chuba Akpom with 19 goals in 26 games: 5 above second best Viktor Gyokeres on 14!

We are the second highest scorers in the Championship, behind leaders Burnley. We have gone from 15 points south of Sheffield United in January, to barking at their heels in February - only four points short of second place. None of this would have been possible without Carrick and his staff and their unique style of Management. We not only have a winning team and a winning Coach, but we have a winning club and winning fans: we`ve not had this connection for almost twenty years. Theres been a clamour for away tickets with the Red Army On Tour for every game. In some instances, we have matched the home fans and could easily have taken double the number, if we had the chance.
Pride of NE.jpg
From the team - there`s no complacency and there`s no arrogance or swagger. Every player in a red and white shirt has been chomping at the bit for game time - for the team. The boys know they will get their chance and must be ready mentally and physically - when called to do their duty.

West Brom had a good start under Corberan and have a good home record - but overall their form is inconsistent. That doesnt make our task any easier. Its that kind of challenge we face every week. We`ve had a week to prepare physically and mentally. As Michael Carrick said last week: "Its time to do it all again and start from scratch".

⚽
Michael Carrick

Carrick YES.jpg
"He`s sitting at the top and hes done that incredibly well. He`s given me unbelievable support since I`ve been here.....Hes the biggest supporter and you can really feel it "[Michael Carrick on Steve Gibson].

A summary of his most recent Media Conference v West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom:
Michael Carrick would take nothing away from West Brom`s ressurgence under Corberan. The upturn following Steve Bruce`s departure is considerable. Their rise up the table has been similar to ours. For Carrick though, league tables count for nothing: "Its not so much the league table, its the quality of the group......this league`s kind of irrelevant from week to week, because its such a challenging league". Its a challenge whether its a top team, a mid-table team or someone at the bottom "....as we have found out ourselves in recent times".

"The League table doesnt come into it when we are preparing for other teams". Its about "...concentrating on what we do to bring the best out of our selves. We just want to win the next game".

Carricks recipe for "Success"?
He answered in his usual humble, calm, collected, pragmatic, fashion: "trying to be myself...theres times to be calm and there`s time when calm is not always the answer, but its finding the right balance. Confidence has grown [amongst the squad] over time, so that helps with calmness and composure, because we`ve come through [different] tests and games - when we`ve been behind or we`ve been chasing games". He repeated that feet need to be "on the ground" and that no-one is "getting carried away". He reiterated that success is down to the "mindset" of the squad and the staff. Preparation and planning are key to good performance. Each challenge is treated like the first one. "We take a lot of energy from the boys and how they have played. The atmosphere around the club at the moment is really good".

Team changes?
Last week, a number of players started who hadnt the previous game, but "the boys are getting used to it. Its no big drama and big news. Just because its [a] change doesnt mean we`ve had a fall out.......it doesnt work like that". When deciding the team "we definitely include everyone, because we appreciate everyone: how important every single player is and can be btween now and the end of the season. Competition is good. It pushes you...". In the past month "the standard of training has gone up" with players becoming faster, slicker and better in each department. When they are called upon..."players have to be ready".

1677256143750.png
On Steve Gibson:
"I think Steve`s been incredible for this football club. I`ve seen straight away when meeting him, his passion for the club and the area and how much it means to him. I think someone in his position should get excited and look forward. Thats why he`s in it - to achieve things and try to build the club. To make it great again - in the top tier, ...pushing to be better all the time. Thats his dream.

"Its not for me to calm him [Steve] down or manage him. He`s his own man and done incredible things for the area. Hes sitting at the top [of the club] and hes done that incredibly well.....and given me unbelievable support since I`ve been here. But, not interfering....[just] letting us get on with it. Hes the biggest supporter and you can really feel it."

"He is in the position he is for the love of it and so he should be!".

John Motson:
"Very sad news. He`s a huge part of me growing up. Watching football, listening to him and how he was describing games - and all the huge games you remember. He`ll be sorely missed".

Tommy Smith?
On his new contract: "I`m really pleased. Tommy`s been fantastic...he`s one of the senior players....a great example to the younger boys within the group...and with his performances he has been a big part of what we do, so I`m delighted.

Crooksy. "Big Tree":
Carrick was asked about the importance of Matt Crooks and whether he could be described as "super-sub"(?). "I wouldnt want to put that label on Crooksy. Its unfair. He`s offered much more and he`ll definitely offer a lot again....between now and the end of the season". Carrick elaborated - the impact Matt has had on performance and within the team cannot be understated. Whether its being on the bench or on for five minutes at the end of a game...."his attitude and mentality has been fantastic". Most of us will second that. Matt`s assists and support to the rest of the team has been vital. No player has to play the full 90 to prove their worth to Carrick and his staff!

Planning for the end of the season and further ahead?
Carrick diplomatically batted away a direct question about Johnny Howson and his future."We`re planning ahead. We know where we want to be at the end of the season and beyond. We definitely have a clear idea of the direction we want to go, how we want the squad to grow and the type of player we want".

The League Cup final:
A reporter asked whom he wanted to win? Newcastle United or Manchester United?
His answer? "May the best team win"!!!!

Come on Boro!
We go again!

Baggies

Match Preview | Albion v Middlesbrough

gettyimages-1245686634.jpg
West Bromwich Albion have the opportunity to extend their unbeaten run at The Hawthorns to nine matches in all competitions when Middlesbrough make the trip on Saturday afternoon (ko 3pm).
The Baggies have won seven of their last eight games on home soil but have tasted victory in just one of their last five Sky Bet Championship fixtures, and Carlos Corberán's men will be keen to earn a welcome three points this weekend.
The contest though is about as tough as it comes in the second tier at the moment, with Boro in sensational form and charging towards the top two having put together a remarkable sequence of 12 wins in 14 league matches and five on the spin.
Michael Carrick's side beat QPR 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, two days before Albion's 3-2 setback at Watford.

Our opponents
Middlesbrough head to The Hawthorns this weekend as one of the form teams in the whole of Europe.

Saturday's visitors will be on the hunt for a sixth successive Sky Bet Championship triumph on Saturday and a tenth in 11 league games.

Michael Carrick replaced Chris Wilder in October and the former Manchester United and England midfielder has completely transformed their season, taking them from relegation candidates to automatic promotion-chasers.

Carrick has won 13 of his 17 league matches in charge of the club, losing just three times. It's a record which has helped propel Middlesbrough into the division's biggest threat to the top two, with Carrick's chargers now just four points behind the Blades, who they beat 3-1 in their most recent away fixture in the middle of the month.

The Baggies will be aware of the threat they pose up at the top end of the pitch. Boro have scored exactly three goals in all four of the last four matches and also boast the Championship's top scorer, Chuba Akpom, who has scored 19 times already this term.

Carlos Corberán discusses key improvements Albion need to implement

1677259730974.png
Carlos Corberán has highlighted two key areas where he believes Albion must improve if they are to get back to winning ways in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Baggies have taken one point from their last three games, suffering defeats at Birmingham City and Watford, as well as being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers.

The run is the longest the club has gone without a victory since the Spaniard took over in late October, but Corberán believes the squad are full of “desire” and “motivation” to get back to a similar level to the one they reached towards the latter end of 2022 and the early part of 2023 when they won nine out of ten in the second tier.
And having meticulously analysed the recent performances, the boss has stressed the need for his players to be "braver in attack" and less "fragile" at the back.

Carlos said: “I have learnt a lot of things over the last few weeks.

“Every time the game is not heading in the right direction there will be reasons for that and reasons why you don’t get positive results.

“We always need to be looking at why there are these reasons because that then allows us the opportunity to change in the next game.

“It’s true that we need to grow from these moments where we are not getting the results.

“There will always be aspects that we need to improve on.

“I think we need to be braver and attack more. That’s the mentality that we need to bring.

“We also need to make sure that we’re aggressive in defence, but not fragile. We need to find a good balance. We can be aggressive and solid at the same time.

“I want us to show a level of personality on the pitch which allows us to dominate games.

“We have to keep building our style to try and help us perform better. The better we perform, the better chance we have of winning more matches.

“In the Championship and in football in general you have moments where you get better results than other times.
At the beginning, we were getting some really good results and there were plenty of things that we did really well.

“Now, these last few games, we haven’t got the results that we wanted to. I think West Bromwich Albion is a winning club and when we step out onto the pitch in every game we try to win it.

“There are things we are doing well, but there are things which we can do much better. We know that small details can be decisive in terms of the changing the outcome of the result.

“We are going to be watching all of these small details because we know small details can have a negative effect on our results too.

“We will always take responsibility for our mistakes because the best way to change when momentum is against you is to take responsibility and face the difficulty.”

In Europe’s top five footballing countries, only Barcelona have taken more points than Middlesbrough’s 27 in the last ten matches.

Michael Carrick’s men are in scintillating form, winning 12 of their last 14 league matches and all of their last five ahead of their visit to The Hawthorns.

The contest is one which Corberán accepts will be difficult given Boro’s terrific run, but also insists it’s one the players are determined to use as a big opportunity to shift momentum back in their favour.

“We’re playing at home tomorrow and we will have the support of our own fans. That means a lot to us.

“We are going to go out at The Hawthorns with the mentality of showing our best and trying to get a big three points.

“We know that we will be up against an opponent which is very good and difficult and will demand us to play very well to get a result. That is our motivation though.

“I don’t see a team with a low level of confidence. I see a team with a lot of desire to play, change the momentum, perform well and get the result we want to get.

“They have won five games in-a-row which means they are doing things very well.

“Their new coach has done a very good job since he arrived and he’s changed plenty of things.

“These things only increase our motivation for tomorrow though. We have a group of players which is capable of winning football games and we need to work hard to do it.

“We know what we have to do and we have players capable of doing it.

“We know the game will be a tough one, but it’s one which every player should have the desire to play in and perform well.”

Those two away trips in 2019 were a couple of the best days following the Boro I've ever had. Winning 3-2 after that little rat Dwight Gayle had run towards us to celebrate at 1-2 was karmic bliss, and then in the same year we had Zlatan Fletcher scoring his volley from Timbuktu.

Last time I made it there - a certain husband of "our Sharon" had been fired and came over with the players at the end:

I'd forgotten that was the Hawthorns too. We were chanting Sol Bamba's name and he was shaking his head and pointing to Warnock instead.

Is our likely team....

Steffan
Smith
Fry
Lenihan
Giles
Howson
Hackney
Forss
Akpom
McGree
Archer

Obviously the Fry/McNair position is a tough pick.

When did a game of football become a moment? Was it the same time that crappy reality TV became journey's? Who knows.

Anyway my super ai hasn't got a clue on this one. May be low goals, but could be a few goals. Boro might win, or maybe west brom or, who knows, could be a draw. I spent 2 years programming that! Might as well ask lorro.

I think there will be very few goals 0-2 to boro. I have managed to predict the correct number of boro goals very accurately lately, if not the goal scorer. Could Steffan break his duck today with a brace?

It`s another "huge" game. Like Carrick says - every game is a new challenge. "We start from scratch". We are now the source of a war medal, for anyone who gives us a hard time. To hold us to a 1-0 or 2-0 win is a victory for our challengers. A draw is a win. Michael Carrick has the mentallity of an unquestionable winner. His ability to diffuse any anxiety or stress from the players is incredible. It allows players to focus on each game without distraction. Big bustling "Championship" style teams try to use physicallity to derail our style of play. An example was the Millwall player who continuously stuck the boot in on Jones. It didnt work. We`ve come to expect that type of play. Rattledbottom`s side tried it, but the likes of Chuba and Archer side-stepped them and proved class overcomes the bully. One good point - any player that has to step in for one who is injured or targeted - is just as capable of doing the job. If Paddy gets injured, Dael steps up and visa-versa. If Forss comes off - Crooks can take his place and instantly impact the game.

Hopefully, today, we can make this 10 wins. If we do and Barcelona lose - we will be the TOP TEAM IN EUROPE league teams right now.
