The official England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 versus Netherlands 🇳🇱 thread - Wednesday at 8PM ⚽️🏆 sponsored by Upex Pies Burra

Gareth got it spot on. A mistake by Man of the Match Declan Rice could have proved costly but the dodgy penalty helped (great penalty again). The Dutch blocked the spaces in the second half and brought on the big centre forward. We had the best chances and we deserved to win. Brilliant goal by Watkins. We can beat Spain. (y)

So I put this on the other thread but I think it’s important to see this and let it sink in…..

In englands ENTIRE World Cup and euros history we’ve won just 18 knockout matches…..Southgate has managed 9 of them! Let that sink in, half of our most important international victories are under southgates management. WTF is wrong with people who think he’s a poor manager? What is wrong with you people?

You’d have to be off the scale stupid to not recognise the success he’s had. Let’s hope he makes it 10 out of 19

Who are the 9 teams he has beat out of interest?

Columbia
Sweden

Germany
Ukraine
Denmark

Senegal

Slovakia
Switzerland
Holland
No easy games there at all.

For the record the other 9 are
Argentina, Portugal, west Germany in 66. This was when Argentina were poor
Paraguay in 86
Belgium and Cameroon in 90
Spain on pens 96
Denmark 02
Ecuador in 06

The only top side pre-Southgate we ever beat in knockouts is west Germany.

Portugal had a couple of great players but not a successful team.

Spain in 96 were good but not in the top 6 in the world. This was pre tikka takka when Spain constantly under achieved.

Others weren’t a top 10 side

I’ll repeat we have never had it so good

First half was excellent, Southgate got the team selection spot on. We absolutely battered them down the right hand side of the pitch. We played with a high tempo and looked so much better for it.

Holland were obviously going to tighten things up at half time but I don't really understand why we seemed to change shape as well. It seemed a combination between them getting back into the game and us letting them back in.

The subs were good and I was glad to see Watkins getting on, Kane is clearly not 100% and I think we'd be a better team with Watkins starting but it'll clearly never happen.

We've just got to get one of these tournaments over the line now however we do it.

Southgate said there were several tactical changes second half by both managers. Both trying to get the upper hand. We could have had two or three second half even though we didn’t play as well as the first. So I’d argue we marginally got the better of the second half too

Wow, what an incredible result it was last night. I fancied us before the game and thought we'd really hurt them going forward. We absolutely dominated them the first half and it was a shame we couldn't get that second goal. Fair play to them though, they came out second half and changed their shape and we did suffer, but this team just always seems to find a way. Bring on Spain.

Btw Foden in that 10 position 🔥

Insane finish from Watkins too. Tough angle that, but the power he generated & the precision - perfection.

Big shout out to Southgate too! I hope he gets his fairytale ending on Sunday! 🥲

Last night was our best ever knockout win outside of Wembley.

It was so significant for this bunch of players, giving them confidence of their abilities individually and as a team. If we do it again on Sunday, away from home, then it’s our greatest win ever.

I really hope he doesn't show fairness and honesty. Despite what England fans think, German football fans don't care about us but HATE the Dutch. Bring on the national bias!
Called it! May "the German referee" become the new "Russian linesman*"

*Yes he wasn't Russian I know. But at the time "Soviet" and "Russian" were used interchangeably. Simpler times

Yeah but he left him out from start of tournament. He didn't play him right up to the final then drop him. As much as Kane hast been on it, he has still scored 3 goals and contributed to our progress. Kane will start and be the right decision I think. But he clearly isn't fit enough to play 120 mins. He'll play an hour and be hooked like tonight.
No he didn't. Greaves played in the group games, was unfit for the Argentina game, fit again for the final but left out.
