The NHS contact-tracing app

My chip insertion was a bit tongue in cheek, but the principle is the same as requiring people to carry a switched on smart phone with them whenever they leave the house with the correct app active so they can be tracked at all times. The only difference is that the chip would cover everyone and at all times, no excuse.

To me humans have to have certain rights or we are not humans - to force people to have be trackable at all times is a big step in taking their freedom to be human. The death rate from CV19 is not high enough to justify some of the measures proposed, we are not in the millions yet.

I've no problem with it as long as they release the source code and I'm able to compile it and side-load it into my phone.

I don't think the technology will work anyway - too many false positives the way it's been described,

I don't have an issue with the app. There are plenty of websites on the internet that will rip it to pieces to look for anything that looks suspicious and those websites will then report it. The world is much more technical these days but that doesn't just apply to governments and big tech companies.

What does perplex me though is say I get a notification Ive been in close proximity to someone who has/had covid-19, I'm then recommended to isolate for 7-14 days. After that period I go outside and I get another alert, what do you do then? Because that's essentially asking you to isolate yourself for up to a month with no symptoms.

Randy your second paragraph has some merit, we would end up with loads of people off-sick.

Your first paragraph is wrong. A rank amatuer can protect their code with something like lattice cryptography. People may not be able to de-compile the code and go through it highlighting anything that looks suscpicious. Even without encryption, look at what some folks can do with C obfiscation. Look at ioccc.org where they give you the source code and let you try and work out what it does. It's a yearly competition.

Surely this can only work if we also get tested to confirm those people have covid otherwise there will be nobody outside. All it takes is one person to go to the supermarket and then say they have symptoms to force a whole town to have to self isolate. At its most prevalent we were looking at an R number of 2.5 of actual cases. This would have an R of about 100 for suspected cases. Exponentially there will be nobody that isn't in permanent self-isolation.

The thing I don't have any faith in is that this app isn't a huge battery drain which means nobody will use it because it just cripples your phone.

I think it requires a positive test and you then are in proximity for some time (10-15 minutes).

Go to a Sunderland game... Walk into the most crowded part of the concourse. Drop your symptom alert and Boom no other people affected cos no one's there. 🤣

P.s. you love a bit of unaccountable snooping bear. 😉

Well I doubt I'll have much choice my friend. In any case I certainly would not abuse such a powerful application for childish pranks even if I could, all in jest guvnor I promise.

Fair point, another thing that makes me think is that way the app will use Bluetooth instead of location or data. I only ever turn my Bluetooth on when I'm listening to my portable speaker or wireless headphones. It's a known battery drainer.

I believe the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol will be used to minimise battery usage.

Yes I had heard this but again not all Bluetooth enabled phones have this feature unfortunately.

I can see the app working for sure even if people only use it whilst they go to and from work.

If it helps us out of the current situation I'm in.👍

Probably the worse the government can find out about me is that I spend too much time in the club.🍺

Not at the moment obviously.
