The next James Bond

It's this still rumbling on. It's an argument to agree to disagree subject. Some don't want the books or indeed films diluted some don't care and are more interested in whether the movie entertains for a couple of hours, which is, after all, it's only ambition.

For me books have a certain sanctity and I don't like any book to be committed to film. Make up your own stories screen writers.

Tend to agree, but if the film is made, it should be true to the story as the author intended, including characters. As others have said, if you want to change that, then create a new character and build the brand on that, not taking an already established one.

I don't think it's much of an issue to change Bond's background without altering the fundamentals of the film series.

You could easily have a black or Asian Bond who's a womaniser and involved in British espionage, though I expect they'd have to set it in the modern day unless they want to skirt around the racial issues he'd face.

He was only made Scottish in the first place because of the impact of Sean Connery.

Films rarely are true to the book, tweaks/differences are made

Interesting debate, but it does appear to be running around in circles now.

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that Bond should be kept as a white male. This is what his character was depicted as in the books and preceding movies. I am quite invested in the books and movies, so it is an important subject for me.I get the urge to have more BAME actors and actresses, but this is simply a case of rewriting a character for the sake of inclusivity.

Why change the basis of a franchise? Having a white male is not racist, or exceptional or offensive. Would you have an actor of Korean descent play the role of Tony Montana in a new Scarface movie? No you wouldn't. Because you would then be changing the complete backstory of the character.

If people are that hellbent on a black, asian, trans, female etc movie and book series centred around a secret agent, go ahead and direct one, but leave the Bond franchise out of this. I do wonder if some people are getting offended for the sake of it. And before anyone says, 'well you are the one that seems to be offended' the truth is, erm yes I am. That alone shouldn't justify my argument, but I have already explained my rationale.

Nobody is saying they are offended by a white bond

Probably like a lot of people I have only ever watched the bond films and not read the books. I have no real interest in the back story, all I needed to know to enjoy them was that he was a British agent undertaking some daring missions.

If he was black, it wouldn't have made any difference, although I'm sure some people wouldn't have been able to cope with a black man being the hero, killing or torturing some white people or even seducing some white women. Chances are if he was black with a car like Bond's he would be getting stopped repeatedly by the police too.

No, he was born in Scotland to a Scottish father, was educated at Fettes and lived at some creaky old house in Scotland.

Bond is more Scottish than anything else.
Half Scottish, Half Swiss according to the author himself

Which was only included in books after Doctor No the film came out, in which Scottish actor Sean Connery played James Bond.

Bond's heritage was first mentioned in 1964 in Fleming's last novel, You Only Live Twice, Dr No came was released in cinemas in 1962.
