The New Beatles Single

I didn’t like the Beatles in the 60’s and still don’t. I can’t believe that radio stations have been suddenly playing Beatles songs this week.

It's not a Beatles song! Lennon recorded this as a demo in 1978. It's typical solo Lennon of the late 70's - pretty dull stuff. It didn't even make his own Double Fantasy album. George is on record as saying it was rubbish when he did the guitar rhythm section on it later.
Just because we have modern technology to completely remaster / rework an old solo demo tape and then add Paul and Ringo on top, it doesn't make it a Beatles song to me. Just an interesting experiment.
To put it out as a Beatle song with all the BS fanfare is just money-making marketing hype but it works for the record company.

It was written for Paul to finish. Lennon had reportedly had it written into his recording contract that he would be released in the event of a Beatles reunion. He had plans to come to the UK in '81 and the tape of the song was in a box with a label on it saying 'For Paul'. In this light I find it quite touching.

Now that the thread is back on track I'll say that in my opinion it is not a great song and if released under any other name than The Beatles it probably wouldn't even be released! I did however find it incredibly emotional on the first listen especially hearing the clarity of John's voice. New technology can be amazing at times.

Hmmm. I hope it’s definitely all true though and not something they’ve made up cos he’s dead and can’t dispute it!

Of all the Lennon material I’ve consumed over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever come across this story, he never seemed up for a reunion musically, although I know he and Paul started to put their differences aside in the late 70s.

Fair enough if so though, just surprising.

Also, were “reunions” craved for in the same way back then?

Must admit I didn't realise. Assumed it was simply a demo (one of many), created by John for a future/current album. Lennon's run in the 70s is pretty decent, there's an album of demos somewhere with some excellent sketches on, I'd suggest this probably isn't one of them.

Impressive what they've done with (although I agree with James Skelley - that rim shot is WAY too high in the mix) but just wish the song itself was a little more interesting.

I feel The Beatles were of their time. Some of their work still stands up today. Some of it sounds like the worse type of boy band music.
Paul's output since The Beatles has been pretty woeful imo.

I like the idea.. but it’s never a Beatles song.

Demo vocals.. very at the front of the mouth.. not high at the back where Lennon sat.. it’s missing that caustic honky tonk piano sound.. would have been a canny b-side to Jealous Guy.

Urggh pretty boring and uninteresting tbh

I’d like to have seen something a bit more interesting going ahead under the Beatles moniker. There was a moment where they were cutting edge, collaborative and even spiritual.. the natural progression for me at least would have seen the Beatles Sprogs being produced by Paul & Ringo.. maybe even a bit of Yoko art direction in there too

If your gonna go concept then a transcendental next generation love letter to the past from the future for all Beatles heads would have been a right good effort.

There plenty of evidence to support it, he absolutely stepped over his mates body as he lay there dying, there is cctv footage of that, didn’t even bother calling an ambulance for him…that’s about as scummy as it gets.

His bouncer also bragged about it, handed himself and signed a confession to doing it….of course his lawyer explaining he’ll be in prison for life made him withdraw it

Not sure why you would give support to Doherty case with plenty of evidence while taking the exact opposite stance with just some individual word of mouth evidence on Lennon

I dont support Doherty, I just pointed out that he didn't actually laugh, as you said, and also that nothings has been proven beyond the documentary.

You reckon that's scummier than bullying your own child?

You're still completely missing the point BTW, which is that you're constantly defending Lennon, yet unable to make the same allowances for anyone else.

I’m not constantly defending Lennon, it’s you that’s missed the point, I absolutely unequivocally pointed out his flaws.

I’ve also made the same allowances for others as I pointed out here, so again another inaccuracy.

Anyway back to the song that everyone else is trying to comment on
