The New Beatles Single

I like the Beatles, you have to consider what went before in Britain...they virtually invented the British music scene as it has stood for the next fifty odd years. Prior to that we had Cliff and the Shadows and a few Elvis wannabees. Without the Beatles there's no Stones, Bowie and so on.....having said that their music is of it's time and this can't really be classed as a Beatles song, just a bit of nostalgia for a couple of 80 year old blokes.

Hmmm. I hope it’s definitely all true though and not something they’ve made up cos he’s dead and can’t dispute it!

Of all the Lennon material I’ve consumed over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever come across this story, he never seemed up for a reunion musically, although I know he and Paul started to put their differences aside in the late 70s.

Fair enough if so though, just surprising.

Also, were “reunions” craved for in the same way back then?
Nostalgia only really started late 70s and early 80s, with some Mod/Ted revivals - so not really such a thing no. Remember 70s were considered naff in the early 90s and 80s until The Killers, so takes about twenty years.....ffs now you've got folk with nostalgia for Scouting for Girls!

Lennon never ruled out reunion, just said it probably wouldn't happen. Don't forget it was only 10 years after they split up he was shot. I reckon they would have had some kind of reunion mid 80s and sounded like The Travelling Wilburys - probably split up again in further acrimony in the 90s and their legacy would be much less.

Their early music is certainly of it’s time and sounds dated but 66-67 onwards is groundbreaking stuff and much still sounds great today

I think it’s fine, watching the video and that’s a really nice touch. I’m not sure it was ever meant to be released as some show stopper Beatles classic.

The fact this thread turned into an argument about, including other things, Boris Johnson is very funny. Very Christmassy, petty squabbles with distant relatives whilst eating cold Turkey 😂

As it happens, I’ve been listening to a few Beatles albums in full of late, having only heard their music via greatest hits etc. Revolver is an absolute gem.

It certainly is, I jump between Revolver, the white album and abbey road as my faves as my faves.

Is this the first Beatles single with a video at the release date?

It's ***** so far but I've only listened to it twice. Will it grow, I don't think so.

Revolver is a great album. The White Album has enough decent tracks to make a 3 sided album. Abbey Road is good. A lot of the early stuff is crapola for me but there are still gems amongst it

It's OK and no more than that. Lennon's version is softer and they've gone to a lot of trouble to extract his voice then drowned it out with loud music interspersed with jangly chords. Seems an odd choice.

For the uninitiated, the fabs-reference-spotting-fest that is the Free As A Bird vid. How many can you name?

In the dim recesses of my brane I seem to remember that "All You Need Is Love" was launched with a short film of them in India?
All You Need is Love was performed for the first time as part of the first worldwide satellite broadcast.

People say the early stuff is dated or not as groundbreaking but having lived through it that’s not true. A lot of it was groundbreaking at the time. Genius gets bandied around a lot but Lennon and McCartney were genuinely genius pioneers.

A lot gets said about Lennon’s flaws and he admitted some (not all mind and there is only really one other account of it) of it but also evolved, changed and learned. It was a violent time. A different time. Easy to judge people without really knowing anything about what they’ve been through or the circumstances they’re in. Everybody has flaws and makes mistakes. To a large extent Lennon learned from his.
