The Madeleine McCann case: “major breakthrough”

This appears a major breakthrough into this tragic case. Lets hope that it leads to a position where Kate and Gerry can finally get to the truth and, although It may still ultimately be a tragic outcome, that they can try to find some way of finding a degree of closure and rest from it. They will always be tormented, that sadly is fact, but after the inner turmoil they have endured for 13 years as well as the pathetic hatred from some in public, I hope and pray they get definitive answers and any guilty individuals are dealt with through the full force of the law. I just hope it is not yet another false dawn.

It does seem like this horrible and desperately sad story is reaching an inevitable conclusion. I am sure this family torture themselves every day about their decision making that night and the regret must be a constant and desperately painful reality that eats away at them every day. They may get some small crumb of solace from knowing what actually happened to their daughter although if this creature is responsible it is likely to be an horrific ending but the reality must be it makes the rest of their lives no less unbearable. So so sad.

I hope the case has set a precedent for when other families have children that go missing.

Not sure about this coz Sharon and Neil on Facebook says they read all the Portuguese police reports using google translate and had cracked the case, so the McCanns are guilty as hell. CASE CLOSED.

Thankfully we can never know what it must be like living their waking nightmare, not only losing a child, but not knowing what happened must be unbearable.

And to be vilified so widely can only make their suffering worse.

I hope they do get some closure, but sadly I don't see any happy endings.

I hope this is not another false dawn.

This guy was one of the people investigated in 2007, so I don't know if there's new evidence that's come to light. I hope there is something new, but why it's taken 13 years to find it is hard to understand.

If Kate and Gerry were from a council estate they would’ve been treated differently. They are at least guilty of neglect.

Imagine the treatment the tabloid press would have given them if they were black...

In what way? They have been scrutinised for the neglect rightly or wrongly but they still lost their daughter and have to live with that pain every day. Think it would been the exact same if it was council estate parents

I think you're probably right. However this doesn't mean anything should've happened to them. They made a bad decision and paid the worst possible price for it.

I think their own gut wrenching guilt and loss is a pretty heavy price they have paid. They have just been told it is almost certain they have caught the creature who killed their little girl. Not the time to be pontificating on the rights and wrongs of their actions but a time to respect their grief

To be fair it wouldn't. No book deals, no donations charitable or otherwise to pay the mortgage and they would be vilified. No constant public funding for a search for her when many many other families are left in a state of limbo not knowing and with no hope.
Whilst this is sad for the McCann family and ultimately Madeleine, why does this family get special treatment compared to others?

Because they worked day and night and dedicated every minute of their lives to the search for their daughter. Raised money to keep it on the public consciousness and were relentless in their campaign. No better or worse than others in similar tragic circumstances but don’t criticise them for doing everything possible to find their daughter.

There has been substantial prejudice against the McCanns, because of their upper middle class social status and thats absolutely wrong.

If they had been from a working class background I'm sure that equal prejudice would have prevailed, which would be equally wrong.

They are parents of a missing, most likely murdered, child - small minded prejudice has no place in this story.
