Has anyone watched the first episode yet?

I tuned in last night, having played the original game for the first time over Xmas, and I thought it was class.

It made the Walking Dead look like it was made by a bunch of amateur's.

I saw the episode length (1 hour 20 minutes), and thought christ I'm going to be falling asleep come the end of this. That hour and 20 felt like 15 minutes.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching it and can't wait for next week's episode.

To anyone who's not played the game, or is put off because of it's an adaptation of a video game, I really would give it a chance because it's got rave reviews after one episode and rightly so.

It isn't going to be drawn out into many seasons like the walking dead either. There'll definitely be a season 2 (basing that off of the fact the game has a sequel), and possibly a 3rd but I think that'll be it.

👌🏻

1. Do you need to have played the game to enjoy it? Maybe not to keep up with it etc, but to really get into this is having some background of the game a requirement.
2. Why only 2,3 series... If its a success surely they'll keep making it at least for 5,6 - I agree TWD went on for a couple series too much though.

I'm not into video games or the like and have never read any of the back story, but thought it was excellent. I don't think you need to have played the game or know anything about the game to enjoy it.

They're basically "recreating" the game .. telling the story from the beginning - so you don't need any prior knowledge of the game as it's a stand-alone story.

1. No, not at all. It’s all about the plot and storyline. In fact, it might be even better having not played it as you won’t know what to expect!

2. I think the game takes precedence over any tv show with this, so I cannot see them adding more to the story with the show, before it’s been covered with a game, if that makes sense. I could be wrong but that’s my take on it.

Yeah no prior knowledge of the game needed at all. I'd say the main reason they've made it into a tv series (other than to inevitably make a lot of money) is because it's a fantastic story, and people who video games don't appeal to can see the story unfold in a way perhaps more enjoyable for themselves.

The creator has said that he wants to sort of expand on what happened in the game with the tv show, and that they'll make a second season if it's popular enough, which it definitely will be because as far as I can see its had nothing but good reviews, and when you've got someone like Pedro Pascal as the lead actor it would be difficult not to get a second season greenlit.

They almost certainly won't go beyond a third season with this, because as said it's based off the games so I think anything more would perhaps be spin offs, and they won't want to f*ck it up like game of thrones by going past the source material. I'm not actually aware of how the second game ends as I'm currently playing through it, but I have heard a 3rd game is in the works so season 3 I think has a decent enough chance of coming out in years to come.

The creator also doesn't seem to be the type to want to churn out loads of content and dilute the quality of it. The sequel to the first game only came out in 2020 and that took 7 years to come out.

It was a bit of a slow burn for me. Kept interested but it did go through my mind that my interest might fizzle as it did with Walking Dead.

Anyone watched 1899? That was a tester, utter rubbish to begin with but I couldn't stop watching and it turned out excellent.

How about Fortitude, for those who like a bit of gore. Some of that was certainly look away material.

Watching tonight after work. Looking forward to it. Never played the games but Pascal is in it so it's bound to be awesome.

I'm no gamer but I watched this last night and thought that it seemed pretty promising. I just hope that it doesn't turn to crap like The Walking Dead did after two or three seasons.

I wouldn’t say so. The game is probably regaraded as the pinnacle of storytelling within a game. Therefore easier than others to put on the screen

1899 Cancelled unfortunately

I started 1899 as I loved Dark - made by the same writers / creators. Stopped watching after 3 episodes as couldn’t get into it. Might try again though.

I watched the first two seasons of fortitude but dropped it and didn't bother watching the third season. Season 2 was a bit mental. Coincidentally I was actually thinking about picking it up again earlier today.

1899 I've watched 5 episodes of it. Slow burner but picks up. Sad that it got cancelled.

It's the best game I've ever played so I've invested many hours in it...although it was great to see lots of the game come to life on screen I think the casting of Bella Ramsey is going to put a lot of lovers of the game off the TV series. Kaitlyn Dever, Eliza Scanlon or even Ellen Page all look like Ellie from the game and are all excellent. Why they have chosen someone that looks nothing like her I haven't got a clue. Spoilt it a bit to be honest...along with them leaving the most important part of last of us out too...the spores!!!

Explanation

Collider interviewed co-creators of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, regarding the upcoming series. During this interview, Druckmann expressed that the decision to remove spores from the show was made early on and was replaced with the idea of tendrils, an interconnected network similar to how actual fungi operate. Spores did not align with this vision that Druckmann and the team had for the series, but they expressed that it was in service of making the world more believable and the virus even more frightening. The changes to The Last of Us narrative were made by the video game creators, which might put fans' minds at ease in knowing this decision was not made lightly.

Ellen page *probably* couldn't be less interested in playing Ellie.

They're now called Elliott Page and I think Bella looks a lot more like Ellie these days...

All 3 of them are too old, Ellen Page has also transitioned and is now Elliot Page (also 35).

Ellie's meant to be a child, Bella Ramsey at least still looks like a young teenager.
Especially when it's a multi-season programme, Scanlen, the youngest of your 3 examples, is 24 right now (and also looks nothing like Ellie) and would be playing a 14 year old for this season, and if it follows the plot of the games exactly then a 19 year old in the next one.

Ramsey is 19 now, but looks younger.

I think the biggest criticism of the show in the build up has been her casting, but she's a good actress and I doubt people who've never played the game are going to be as hung up on her not looking like an exact replica of the video game character.

Wasn't even aware of this being a video game until I read this thread. Thought the first episode was good and made The Walking Dead look like Bluey.

I had to get on my IMDB app as I knew Tess from somewhere and then realised she was Dr Wendy Carr from Mindhunter.
