We need more goals. There is no getting around this. Who gets dropped or replaced? Sporar - fans love him but he doesn’t score enough. Watmore - fans love him but he doesn't score enough. Tav, most fans love him but he doesn't score at all. Chris WIlder is going to have to throw sentiment out of the window if he’s going to get more goals in this team. Not easy.

I think both Sporar and Watmore are key to how good we are. They should both score more, but I’m sure Wilder knows we need one or two more strikers who can do the same job and add goals to. If we had 4 fit strikers, each with slightly different attributes, who can handle the workloads, then I reckon more goals will come.
Payero will get his chance at some stage if we lose a game or two and Tav struggles. It’ll be up to him to take the shirt and hold on to it.

To be fair we've needed goals for about 5 seasons. I think we were the lowest scoring side in the top 6-8 when we went up under Karanka.

Sky came out with a stat at the back end of last season saying we had scored something like 116 goals in 106 home games (roughly those figures). This season is the exact same trajectory.

We have spent an obscene amount on forwards over the recent champo period. Throw in 5 managers and styles but still don't win games easy due to lack of goals. It's always 1-0 or 0-0 with 10 mins to go.

I'm more confident in Wilders style. That said how many times under the previous managers did we say 'how did we not win that?'. It's all down to missed chances. Blackpool / Hull / Millwall / PNE are off the top of my head games we should have won but for missed chances.

So I'm guessing 'we are going again' and linked with 2 new forwards. Recent history suggests they won't workout. When did we last have a good one? Even on loan? Bamford. So going back a while.

Getting a 20 goal striker in the January window is going to be nearly impossible. The prices of half decent strikers are inflated, load of clubs are after the same limited commodity.
If we did manage to get a decent striker who gets dropped ? For me it would have to be Whatmore.

Confidence is high in throughout the team, just we havent seen that turn into goals. I think Sporar has the makings of a clinical striker but he's never produced anywhere with the amount of goals hes potentially capable of. Watmore and Sporar to similar, we need a different kind of striker or them both to play off

CW will throw sentiment out of the window for the good of the team.

All our attacking players need to chip in with more goals, but I can't help but think it is the creative side of things which is the problem.

At this level, none of the strikers are scoring every chance, nowhere near. Against Bournemouth Sporar got what... one good chance and a penalty. Missed the good chance and scored the pen.

Logic dictates that the more we create the more we score, and at the moment we don't create enough.

Not to say that our current strikers are fantastic, we could definitely do with some competition and a real proven goal-scorer

I was surprised too, remember though a lot of those appearances will have been late substitutions.
was also surprised Mark Viduka only scored 26 in 72 appearances, thought he’d have had more games than that.

wonder who had the best scoring figures in the riverside era? JFH scored 22 in 58.
It must be Rav with the best figures? 32 goals for Boro in 50-odd games.

For some reason Wikipedia only thinks league goals count. A lot of Viduka's goals were in the cups, particularly the UEFA.

Bamford spent quite a lot of matches either stuck out wide (under Pulis) or as a "10" under Monk. His stats when played as a striker must surely be a lot better.

Promotion 2015/16, top scorer Nugent with 8

Who was top scorer in 97/98 and 94/95 and how many did they score?

In all those seasons forwards came in in January and made significant contributions (Rhodes/Ramirez, Branca/Armstrong, Fjortoft/Fuchs) so although the number of goals scored by the top scorers in each of those seasons weren't particularly high (think it was probably Hendrie and Beck in the other 2 seasons?) the number of goals scored by the strikers overall, was probably pretty decent. It's just they effectively only had half a season each.

Give it time. We are moving in the right direction
CW himself said he would need 2 windows, for ins and outs

Would be nice not to be papping my pants in the last 10 mins though

Yep, 42 goals in 103 matches in all competitions. It's the 16 in 31 cup games, many in Europe, that he'll be remembered for.

While it is true that we need to score more goals, I think our fans will be saying this even if we were scoring bucket loads. If we averaged 2 goals a game, we'd still be missing plenty of chances, and fans wold still be kicking off about the need to score more goals.

Only 1 team in the last 6 championship seasons has averaged more than 2 goals/game: Norwich (93) in their first promotion. In the other 5 seasons, the division's top scorers haven't gotten close to that mark: 79, 80, 82, 85, 72. Even Leicester, the last team to really smash the division and break 100 points, scored 83 goals.

So I do think we can over-estimate what prolific goal scoring looks like at this level. It will feature plenty of missed chances, and plenty of matches when the team struggles to score more than 1.
