The enigma of Isaiah Jones

What has happened to Jones, he has stopped trying to take men on, in favour of turning and passing back, he has stopped getting to the byline and putting those low hard crosses onto the 6 yard box, he hasn’t lost pace, as at one point last night, he chased down their keeper very quickly, it is an odd one???

He's started resorting more and more on just diving and referees have grown wise to it.

The last 3 penalties he won were all dives in my eyes and it's not something I like to see.

He could have set Connolly up for a tap in last night and flung himself to the ground instead, it's weird.

He does dive a lot like.

I think he has lost pace - a couple of times he put the ball past the defender and couldn't get past him himself.

Confidence mostly. Lot to expect for a young lad to play 46 championship games hitting his early season form every game. That and teams have either double marked him or dropped back 20 yards so it's difficult for him to get past them without running out of pitch. He needs to up his game to combat this. His next step.

he is going through a rough patch, and it will be the biggest test he has faced so far to see how he can pull through it.

At the moment, had we still had Spence playing, he would be playing second fiddle.

He hasn't lost any pace just a bit of confidence, teams have also worked him out and it's rare he gets 1v1 against a full back there is usually a covering midfielder on the inside channel. Weve also stopped getting the ball forward quickly enough to him so he is picking the ball up higher in the attacking half, leaving him less space to run at pace at defenders

He's reduced his taking players on it as he's clearly lost a bit of confidence, but he's right to pick and choose. Sometimes he'll have it at a standing srart with a couple of players in front of him and no real support nearby. He';s right to keep posession in those scenarios yet fans expect him to run down blind alleys
I did comment on the diving on another thread, he needs to forget that, he's likely to get taken down anyway or create something if he just keeps going.

We used to play a lot of 3 men triangles between Jones, Crooks & Dijksteel. Dijksteel doesn't seem to be pushing on as much, maybe that's due to Fry being missing so needing more pace at the back with Bamba or maybe it's because Bola on the other side means McNair is getting forward more so needs covering there. I don't think it's a coincidence that since Taylor has been swapped for Bola, Jones has been more of a wing back than a winger. It was almost played like a back 4 with Taylor allowing Dijksteel and Jones to get forward a lot.

Definitely there has been more focus from oppositions on him. He's no longer an unknown. He is asked to do the bulk of our creative work on his own. Lot of pressure for a young player. Better forwards and a better LWB should spread some more of the creativity around and free Jones up a bit.

You're right about the triangles. McGree is doing well in his own way but Crooks would get right up close to Jones and wide, as would Dijksteel. Maybe you're right, the loss of Taylor on the left has maybe reduced our ability to overload on the right. We were managing to get Jones into positions where the defender was isolated against him. I don't think it's down to other teams figuring him out, everyone knows he's been our dangerman most of the season, but we've stopped dragging teams around before playing him in.

He got past the full back a number of times last night but made poor decisions. He's a winger, they were the most hit and miss players when I was younger, not sure about now as they're a rarity.

He misses Crooks but I noticed on one occasion when Watmore was running along the byline Jones stood and watched, had it been him making the run Crooks would have ran parallel and gave the defence a difficult choice to make.

He needs to cut the diving out though, cost us a tap in chance last night.

First year of Championship football and he's still learning. Fantastic season.

We largely ignored him last night, only a handful of times was he given the opportunity whereas we spent most of the night trying to work it down the left for some reason, probably because Tav and McGree both heavily left footed, especially McGree.

He does need to pack it in with the diving, it's embarrassing and will only hinder us as refs have cottoned on to it.

He is missing Crooks enormously.

His form was dipping well before crooks got suspended to be fair. He hasn't been himself for the last 6-8 weeks in my opinion.

It's his first full season after playing at a much lower level before this.

Still my player of the season though, very closely followed by Howson.

I'm putting it down to burn out.

A good rest after these next 2 games and he'll be firing again at the start of next season.
