The enigma of Isaiah Jones

You're right about the triangles. McGree is doing well in his own way but Crooks would get right up close to Jones and wide, as would Dijksteel. Maybe you're right, the loss of Taylor on the left has maybe reduced our ability to overload on the right. We were managing to get Jones into positions where the defender was isolated against him. I don't think it's down to other teams figuring him out, everyone knows he's been our dangerman most of the season, but we've stopped dragging teams around before playing him in.
Exactly this. The tempo in our play isn't there, when we moving the ball around in front of the box earlier in the season, working from right to left and back again in our little triangles we were dragging teams all over the place and often leaving jones 1 on 1.

At the moment we are taking an extra touch, not zipping the passes about and the opposition have an easier task of doubling up. That said I thought jones put one or two good low crosses in last night, the type that were resulting in Oggies earlier in the season.

Apart from the diving; I don't think he's too much different than before in his approach.

He put in a few good balls and some poor ones last night. Sometimes he beat the defender, other times he didn't.

He'll definitely be featured much more in opposition scouting and he's not used to playing this many games at this standard. I think most of us if asked would've predicted a slight falling away in form.

What I don't like about his game is his pointless stupid fouls and bookings. He needs to sort that part out for next season.

His form was dipping well before crooks got suspended to be fair. He hasn't been himself for the last 6-8 weeks in my opinion.

It's his first full season after playing at a much lower level before this.

Still my player of the season though, very closely followed by Howson.

I'm putting it down to burn out.

A good rest after these next 2 games and he'll be firing again at the start of next season.
Not that I'm a slavedriver, but I hope he doesn't get a good rest after these two games me like.

He was a bit hit and miss last night but kept going. Like others have said, went to ground a bit easily and could have laid one on a plate for Watmore I think when he shot instead. Needs to work on his finishing - slashes at his shots a bit. However his pace still looked decent and took on the full back on occasions. Hopefully that continues for the rest of this season and into next year too.

youve got to bear in mind hes still learning the game ,overall, hes had an outstanding season ,hes obviously going to have dips in form, but i believe he will be a better player next season for us

I don’t think there is any enigma.
He’s been brilliant. One of the players of the season and in his first senior year.
Any dip in form is well within the norms for any player and he’s still been effective in that time.
Wait until next season when he has a full, senior pre-season and has had time to rest, recover and work on improving his game in the interim months.
He’s our best young player since Downing. Lots to look forward to.

What has happened to Jones, he has stopped trying to take men on, in favour of turning and passing back, he has stopped getting to the byline and putting those low hard crosses onto the 6 yard box, he hasn’t lost pace, as at one point last night, he chased down their keeper very quickly, it is an odd one???
Lads sat behind me were alluding to this on Wednesday night. They seem to be expecting him to take people on from the half way line or even half way inside the opponents half. He's never done this. His success was based on slick interplay with Crooks and Dijksteel to eventually feed him in on the edge of the 18yd box with one defender to beat. Teams have worked out this is our principal threat and are taking measures to snuff it out. Crooks' and Jones' apparent 'loss of form' is down to the opposition making things harder for us on the right. As many people have said previously we need options elsewhere.

On the positive side, this loss of form might put off potential buyers and more chance of having him for next season, whereupon he bounces back.
