The end?

You realise you are just spouting nonsense don't you?

Until you can come up with a suggestion as to give Ukraine peace then simply making trite statements like

Make you look silly.

I have not seen a single "warmonger" on here. I wish the war had not happened but it has and it isn't going to stop until both sides can agree. And one of those sides will not stop until it has annexed/stolen a large chunk of the other. I don't know what you've got against Zelensky but this war was started by Putin.

Oh and saying

sounds very racist.

Are you on glue?

Genuine question

You also sound like a knuckle dragging racist… do you say the same about all those Muslims?

You need to take a break before you get yourself in trouble

Acklam Lad and Muttley - no intention to sound racist I just mean they are very close neighbours at war, apologies if it came across like that.

Also apologies if my alternative and anti war views have offended, which they clearly have, I will keep off the thread.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon without any nuclear missiles being fired, I’m sure nobody on this forum wants to see that.

I don't think anyone here wants to fall out with anyone else. Times are hard, the future is uncertain, bordering on scary and emotions are running high. Keep the faith, HC. UTB!

Most, if not all on this thread are anti-war, but they are also anti-despot and that is what we are dealing with in Putin. It is his aggression that has caused the conflict and his escalation in rhetoric that is putting the nuclear option on the page. His strategy of making ill-gotten gains part of Russia and thus any counter attack on those Ukrainian states an attack on Russia further escalates the conflict.

Bowing to his demands only creates a much more uncertain future when he decides to extend Russia's reach in other territories. The buck must stop here and he must be stopped now.

Putin is only the head of a massive political system, a personification of a deep rooted anti-Western ideology. He really believes in it, it is bigger than life, a crusade, his spiritual mission. I don't think that we in the West can really understand it.

Nobody really knows the true diplomatic situation and if you believe our media then you need your head looking at.

You’re getting a bit chippy with people here and not for the first time, up to here I’ve been nothing but respectful in response to you.

I didn’t mention our media. I lived in Moscow mate, I’d wager with nearly 7 years in the former USSR I get information from a more eclectic and informed range of sources than you can.

By saying Slavs are “one and the same” shows a serious lack of understanding both of ethnicity and history, similar to ones Putin and other Russian nationalists make funnily enough… they have different languages, have been parts of different empires, have different historical experiences etc etc.

Your accusations of war mongering are insulting and go against the words people are actually saying - no one wants this damn war (I had to uproot my family and leave my f*cking home because of it thankyou very much) but it’s been thrust upon us by a real war monger and it isn’t just going away because you want it to. That’s regardless of any interventions, Russia is in Ukrainian territory and the Ukrainians don’t want them there.

Regardless, I’ve politely asked more than once for your solutions and you have offered nothing of any depth or substance and no critical understanding of this war and how different options would play out - this is always partially guesswork but at least try to understand the full context, especially when Putin has told us and demonstrated to us his intentions since as far back as 2007, now that’s fact and not “our media” or my own opinion.

Finally, Putin is highly unlikely to “be a nutter”, seriously listen to what he says and does. I’ve explained before on this thread the reasons, if you choose to believe he’s just mad then you aren’t seriously engaging with what he shows us bar some cliched, western tabloid caricature. Also, you advocate western governments trying to remove Putin in one of your posts… considering that’s a direct threat to Russia and could certainly lead to nuclear exchange, and you call others war mongers?!

It’s not your anti-war views that have offended - we’re all anti-war just with different views on how this plays out - it’s more throwing around silly accusations like “war mongerers” that have no basis on what is actually being said. You don’t need to stay off the thread, just give us some alternative suggestions that sound feasible and can be backed up and we can discuss pros and cons with civility, I’m very happy to engage with you when we’re all being respectful.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon without any nuclear missiles being fired, I’m sure nobody on this forum wants to see that.

That’s something we can agree on.

Fair comment and I’m sorry this ‘maniac’ has caused you such personal upheaval.

I will read but not post on this thread going forward, the overriding point I have failed to get across with any success is my view that ‘feeding’ a war is pointless and I think a lot of western politicians seem happy to feed it without exploring other options. But as you say, I’m no expert on those options and don’t pretend to be either.

All of these Nordstream shenanigans really do make you question the security of some of our undersea pipes and cables.
It's a strange one for me and I'm not really sure who is to blame. At first glance you'd think the Russians would have perpetrated it as a warning that they can attack our infrastructure without being caught.

However, once this settled they'd probably hope for eventual restoration of relations and therefore selling us at least some energy. To blow the pipes up would be detrimental to them.

I'm not saying they haven't done it of course just that I'm not convinced that everything is as it seems here. Hopefully they'll be able to prove one way or another once the gas has stopped pumping into the water and the pipes can be examined.

Russians didn't blow up the pipelines. Makes absolutely zero sense for them to do so as WeeGord has said.
But countries will do 'investigations' and ultimately Russia will be blamed.
Smells like a 'weapons of mass/biological destruction' moment to me.

I think feeding a war for just that sake is pointless and leads to unnecessary death and destruction, I’m not convinced that’s the case here but maybe western politicians could do more… I’d like to hear some ideas on these lines but who knows? We’re not usually privvy to those conversations so, similar to some of my own speculations, you may or may not be right on that score, let’s hope we’re all happy and healthy to find out in the future.

You don’t need to stop posting on the thread as I’m sure you still have much to contribute, for what it’s worth you have made interesting posts. We’re never all always going to agree but everything will be grand as long as the discourse is civil and we all can reassess our own opinions in the face of new information and persuasive astute arguments.

Finally, whatever upheaval I faced, whilst costly and stressful, was nothing in comparison to what Ukrainians were suffering at that time, and continue to suffer in the face of a despotic gangster.

Here’s an alternative view from the usually on-the-ball Galeotti, I’m not convinced on this one yet, I can see reasons for different actors undertaking this so I’ll see how it develops.

Thanks for that, I don’t mind posting but I thought some of the responses were getting a bit abusive including being accused of racism and being some kind of drug addict so my instinct was to dip out rather than wind people up on an emotive issue.

I think one of the problems is that if you start robustly questioning the current strategy on this war some people assume you are some kind of pacifist at all costs who is happy to give in to Putin which is the exact opposite of what I think, I agree Putin and his like must never be allowed to succeed.
