The end?

Putin has spoken.

Mobilisation of reserves, annexation and threats re his nukes.

Pretty much what you would have expected.

Russian State TV, "We should have bombed the UK on Monday at the Queen's funeral". Also stating, "The UK is the axis of evil". Nice.

I can’t imagine the moral of being to conscripted to a war being an all time high.

My take is it’s one of 2 things

1) posturing a last roll of the dice

2) he’s gonna go full nuke mad man

More likely to be the first

since the beginning of the year the west has been underestimating what Putin is going to do many said he would not invade etc, who knows what he is going to do next but I would not rule out him taking the nuclear option it is complete madness

He’s using the nuke argument to make the shakier elements in the EU and in NATO waver and call for peace (=Ukraine giving up a significant amount of their sovereign territory and leaving themselves vulnerable to future attacks). He does this because it’s worked in the past, but he’s also backed down when stood up to over the years too, Brian Whitmore has previously given some good examples of when.

He’s a thuggish gangster and right now he’s lashing out, he knows that the nukes threat will scare people (understandably) but it comes with massive risks to himself and Russia… a thermo nuclear war is unthinkable, but even a tactical or battlefield nuke (whichever is the correct terminology) would lose Chinese support, complete the alienation of Russia and increase support to Ukraine. I think they’re hollow threats by a spoilt bully, but again, I’m glad I’m not a gambler because I’m not overly confident!

Going to take 3-6 months to mobilise the reserves (assuming some have prior military experience) and there are serious doubts as to whether Russians have the basic equipment for this amount of troops.
This, coupled with morale being rock bottom with existing units in Ukraine, the impending winter, and Ukraine having state of the art western weapons which are having a massive effect on the battlefield........could be lambs to the slaughter.

Sham referendums, mobilisation......last throw of the dice?

...or he goes full nuclear...?

Incidentally those who say there should be no more attempts to liberate areas of Ukraine to 'stop the killing'....
It was liberating areas controlled by the dictator that stopped the killing in Bucha , Irpin , Izium etc - as shown by the many tortured and murdered bodies found in those areas
