The end of the Mondeo

It's fall from grace for that car no doubt. It used to be the biggest selling car in the country.

Makes me sad as most people want SUVs and they are universally ugly, ungainly, too tall boxes on wheels

Ah, the Mondeo. Love em!

When I was working as a multi drop driver for an electrical firm for a year after uni 1998/9, our reps all had Mondeos. They needed to get a fuseboard to one of their best clients in Aylesbury urgently one day (we were based in Wembley) and I was in the stores and all the vans were out, so one of the reps chucked me the keys to his 2.0 turbo diesel and sent me on my way to get it to them.

It was mid afternoon so the road between Watford and Aylesbury (A41) was quiet, so I just put my foot down. I went so fast that the windscreen cracked. I won't post the exact speed, but it was fkn quick!

I was there and back in about 75 minutes or something, the rep came back in the store just after I got back in and had a right go at me asking why I hadn't gone yet.... couldn't believe it when I told him i dropped it off about 40 mins ago.

haha. What a motor that was! :)

he wasn't too chuffed when I told him about the windscreen mind, I told him a stone hit it on the way back.

I've got one currently as a works motor, tremendous car. Couldn't believe the amount of extras it had on it when I got it. Almost feels like a downgrade getting in the missus Audi.

great car, but ultimately destined for failure when BMW was able to knock out entry level 320D's for the same price.

Yesterday"Mondeo man" is more aspirational today and wants a 320 BMW with black alloys.

Yeah it shows the sad thing about image of certain brands. Ford knew the mondeo couldn't just be like an a4 or a 3 series. It had to offer better toys to compete.

So not true, the mondeo is a much better car to drive. Some might go for the badge I guess..

I agree 100% that the mondeo is a better car. I had a high spec diesel estate mondeo for a few weeks as a hire car, and honestly, its every car I could have ever hoped for.

Was it a better car to drive though? It's a good 25 years since I've driven either but surely the RWD balance of the BMW makes it a better drivers car?

That being said the Mondeo was bigger (especially boot space) and as other have said, more kitted up.

Its all I drove for 3 cars in a row. I went to a vectra after the mondeo's and god it rolled like a ship in distress. Great on motorways, **** on snake pass.

I’m also on my third Mondeo. Bought this one second hand in 2015 for £5000. It was a 2008 model. It has passed each MOT first time since and I can get 3 sets of golf gear in the boot including trolleys. Ideal for motorways with cruise control but a bit overpowered for town as I have to drive in 3rd gear or I am over the 30 mph limit!

You don't have to keep the engine at 5000 revs 😉
