The Dark Side of the Moon

Now I’m of a certain age and listened to this when it first came out as an 18 year old. I tried again as my taste developed into my 20s and every now and then I go back to it. I listened again yesterday from start to finish

I get it’s supposed to be a bit avant- garde and it’s supposed to be a concept album and not necessarily individual songs and that loads of people love it but ultimately it’s all just nonsense isn’t it? A dirge of nonsense from start to finish?

It got me thinking. What are the other artistic works that are critically acclaimed works of genius that you just don’t get?

For me they are all individual songs, just without an interlude between them. It will have been a music journo naming it a concept album, and you don't have to agree with them.

I quite like it, was 16 when I first heard it but I haven't heard it in full for a while.

DSOTM is one of the albums I revisit occasionally and when I do listen to it I end up listening to it several times. In every sense a classic.

Music that I "just don't get" = the entire output of The Smiths (even before we all found that Stephen was a complete chod end, I can't stand his voice it's like aural itching powder)

But
There's no such thing as good or bad music.

Just music you like, or you don't.
This.

Jeff Beck is the artist I don't get. He's so highly rated as a guitarist by everybody and on the face of it should be right up my street but, and I've tried listening hoping something clicks, I just don't see/hear it 🤷

you were 18 in 1973 - surprised at that.

you use words of a much younger person - i should add that i hated it when i first heard it, now i think its a masterpiece and more than holds its own of its time.

i also had an epiphany with Led Zep - their albums take me over when i listen to them, i came very late to them, in my late, very late 30s.

Its an album I’d class as one of the all time greats.
I really can’t stand what’s going on by Marvin Gaye, tried to listen a few times and just find myself totally bored.

I really don’t like the beach boys either - pet sounds isnt great, might have a few classic songs about them but no more than most bands.

I just don't get the Stones or U2. Very overrated imo.
Got into Pink Floyd in my late teens and saw them play The Wall. Much prefer their earlier experimental stuff these days, particularly Live at Pompei. DSOTM sounds a bit dreary now.
