The Chuba Akpom Appreciation Thread

This one season wonder crap gets on my nerves. He is the one we need to keep, the player thrown on the scrapheap last year who has found his niche, his correct position, the manager, the fans, the right club now. Stay here, we have a great chance of going up. If he goes he might struggle, we might struggle. Just sign the contract Chubba / MFC. You are a year away from the most lucrative (sorry, forgot about the desert) League in the world.

I wonder what would happen if he say went to Lens or Ajax, does okay and somehow we get promoted and want to buy a new striker. Would we be interested in buying him back for £20M and prem wages? That is potentially what we are losing and he is already here. Seems crazy to sell him, but I guess this is where we are at!

I’d love him to stay. Scored goals last season, I think he could do as well this season with the right players around him.
He’s such a good footballer, good vision, great balance, pacy.
Another important factor, is that he’s here already so doesn’t need time to settle like a new signing would.
Plays with a smile on his face, the other players seem to like him.
When I hear him interviewed seems an intelligent likeable lad.
But, if he goes I wish him well, hope he doesn’t!

Akpom was great last season and I’d prefer him to stay, but if there was a remote sniff of being able to sign Cameron Archer with the money I’d do it in a heartbeat. Archer would be such a hugely clever investment. He will be top drawer, which is why it will remain a dream. The ending to last season will forever remind me of the summer of 1997 and what might and could have been 😥

Personally, I'd put losing Akpom up there with the worst choices (and it is a choice) I've seen at the club. Just give him the contract that a record goalscorer deserves. I'd have him over Archer any day of the week. My hunch (and hope) is that the club delayed giving him a new contract until they could be certain that his knee injury is clear, and not a long term problem (as knee injuries can be).

This whole 'we have a great chance of going up if he stays' BS narrative really needs to stop! We had the best team we've had in years, goals from all over the park, Chuba had the season of his life, POTY and we still fell short when it mattered. I know our season was split in two CW/MC but when you make it to the playoffs your fate is in your hands. We are significantly weaker than last season no matter how you want to sugar coat it. Giles, Ramsey, Archer and even Steffen to a degree hit the ground running. Jeez even Muniz looked a player in the early games! We've had a flat summer, poor pre season and now lost opening game. We scraped through against 10-man Huddersfield and now two players linked we are going to win the league. The club can not and will not risk missing out on this money and I believe we will be lucky to get £10m. As the window gets closer our resolve drops.

We finished 4th, despite being absolutely awful for the first 3rd of the season. In October we were in the relegation places. If we get in a striker and a left back which there's every chance we will we could be as strong if not stronger for the whole of the season, not just 2/3rds of it.

You wouldn't want to be in the trenches next to some of our fans, we lose one game against a team who just missed out on the play offs and you get utterly negative nonsense like the above.🙄

Championship with Middlesbrough
Premier League with Sheffield
Eredivisie with Ajax
Champions League with Lens

tough call
Genuinely torn as to where I would go if I was in Chuba Akpom’s position..

Tbh.. I’d drop boro, been there fine that, maximum disrespect, proved my point.

Bring the number 10 for Ajax would be a great story.. but I’d fear just dropping of the radar. Could Ajax be on the up? More if a selling club.

Sheffield United.. don’t need a big move, in the prem showcasing my skills playing Arsenal twice. Relegation battle?

Lens in the Champions League.. 22nd fav at 250-1 top 20.. Man City are favourites, Arsenal, Man Utd, Newcastle rated higher.

Guaranteed big games in the prem, more eyes on me, easier move, easier to settle in.. but they don’t look anywhere near.

Lens.. good club, good players, champions league, change in culture, new league.. possible in road to a higher premier league move.

The players choice gotta be Lens.. surely?

It’s a very very difficult situation with Akpom. 12 months ago he was nowhere. Looked like his time here was done, and he was off to try again at resurrecting his career elsewhere.
Then BOOM, a 29 goal season comes from absolutely nowhere. You could say from Carrick moving him deeper, but he started well for Wilder too, let’s not forget.
Now, he’s gone from the get rid quick pile to a value of, who knows what! That is because, there is still the question of, can he do similar again? If he does, where does his value go? He’s not getting any younger and he’s in his last year of a contract. Very difficult things to balance. Especially when a good few quid in the bank would certainly help persuade someone like Cameron Archer back here.

The club can’t throw thousands per week at him, given his past, in the certainty that he guaranteed goals and assists. It’s absolutely not guaranteed. But then £8m quoted is also ridiculous for a 29 goal striker. You can absolutely see why this is taking a while to sort it. But what is the correct answer?

I imagine the Prem is his first choice, unless hes willing to swap it for 3 group games in the Champions League and maybe a push at 2nd in Ligue 1.

Sounds like it’s done. Boro will contacting all interested parties to put their best offer in within 48 hours, to get a good price as quickly as possible

Bye bye Chuba. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Thanks for the memories but you went missing when it mattered in the playoffs.
Bit unfair considering we had injuries to key players, and the manager has to take some of the blame for the last few games.

If he wants to sign he will the fa t he hasn’t says it all.

But I’m surprised a player that has spent his entire career as a nomadic wannabe is now prepared to gamble it all and walk away after last season from a team that he’s finally settled into.

Ah well I think he’ll regret. It.
