Teesside Airport Scoops Award

But if it had been quiet for 10 years and someone spent £100m on it, but it was called the Tees19 would you be thrilled when there was another road already that is slightly longer?

Having roads and rail links are far more important and we should be spending that money on improving local infrastructure, but it should be based on what most people can use and benefit from rather than subsidising a small set.
I remember when the A174 Parkway was built and for years and years people were writing into the gazette saying it was a white elephant.

Imagine the chaos now if the Parkway hadn’t been built?

Sometimes you need a bit of vision and rounded thinking.

I would personally keep it open, it's gone too far to stop its growth. Bearing in mind you have other companies on the airfield like Draken and Willis aviation bringing in jobs and revenue along with many others. It's not just about holiday makers is it. However, I would like to know what Easyjet pay for training in the airspace along with the military who are regular visitors. If the airport was closed when Peel had it could we now be looking at:

1. Not so affordable houses in an affluent area.
2. Prisons are often on old RAF airfields.
3. An immigration center like the former bases at Linton on Ouse and Scampton.

Be careful what you wish for!
I may be part of a minority on this subject but I want to see the area thrive and stop living in the past.
I want it to stay open too, but not be subsidised by rate payers. It's time businesses got together and made it work if they want an airport.. The majority in the area don't use it, the wealthier in the area do. The poor shouldn't be subsidising the wealthy. That's what you call living in the past

If we're going to subsidise transport we should be making sure it's available to many, not the few

The few jobs that have been created have come at a big cost.

My living in the past was regards to BSC and ICI industries that put Teesside on the map, we need to move on, but that's another thread. I know Willis Aviation has invested heavily and the increase of Draken jets must bear fruit but when, who knows. KLM have the monopoly and charge what they want, no escaping that. Others are down to landing fees and overnight stops, it's not cheap and overcharging would bring more operators pulling out.

Was there not a Heathrow flight for a time? Extremely expensive and unprofitable......

Heathrow flight was on during covid. Heathrow had lots of empty slots so I imagine logan made them an offer to get a slot. The problem with Heathrow is that they usually charge the same extortionate landing fee for A380s as small planes like Logan operated. Obviously the route wouldn’t continue when the larger planes ate up the slots again.

Most municipal airports have winter schedules, nowt new. Alicante is a winter destination, others should follow suit like Turkey and Bulgaria.
Whichever airport it is, the only holiday destination is Benidorm. Presumably some long transfer time when you arrive.

Turkey IS a winter destination, and has been for a long time. I am normally there for Nov/Dec. You take a chance with the weather. In a Mediterranean climate, you're in the rainy time of year.

As with the Spanish coast, not the best time of year if you need it 30C and all day sun.

You can fly all year round from Newcastle and Manchester to Anatalya. Presumably anyone from Teesside can use these airports in the winter pretty easily.

I don't ski, but isn't Bulgaria a winter ski destination? I assume, again, available from the main northern airports.

I'm not a lover of Houchen and never have been and certainly don't want to come across as defending him

What I struggle to understand here is the people who are knocking the airport are the first ones to say we have limited infrastructure, transport, etc. in the North East.
Airports are not the type of infrastructure we need, it’s stuff we use everyday we need more of like trains and buses, not summer charter flights you can just as easily get from Leeds or Newcastle.

I would have thought that was patently obvious but the Tory apologists seem blind to it at every turn

I agree with your point on the buses, trains, roads, etc. and only a fool would argue against that but having an airport on our doorstep could attract potential business and investors which could bring in much needed employment to the region. Potential investors see airports as a key indicator of a region's growth potential and could have a possible knock on effect with other modes of transport. Is it so wrong to want an airport as well as buses and trains?

Regarding you call calling me a Tory apologist, that’s a first, and maybe because it is a Tory project that you are so against it. I think that statement says more about you.

Potential investors? We’ve had an airport for decades, Boro should look like Dubai by now! Where is it all then?

If you’re dumb enough to fall for the Ben Houchen vanity project then good for you!

You're just being silly now.
No saying that a flight to Alicante equals going to Benidorm is the silly thing. He’s said it more than once in this thread so I had to call it out for what it is - utter nonsense.

There are many legit arguments for and against but that is once of the silliest I’ve heard.

It isn't about falling for a vanity project, it is about wanting to improve the area and I personally feel that an airport can help with this.
