"Team GB"

For some reason I've hated this team brand. I've always thought it sounds cheesy.

Why can't they just call the team 'Great Britain' like they did pre 1996.

The chanting of "Team GB, Team GB" by middle aged ladies decked in UJs will never eclipse the more aggressive USA USA.

The BOA explains that officially “Team GB is the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team”.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland make up the UK, but Team GB also represents athletes from the Crown Dependencies listed above, which are not part of the UK.

To explain further why the name was chosen, the BOA previously put out a statement ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics which said: “Neither ‘UK’ nor ‘GB’ accurately describes the BOA’s remit nor would they be representative of all the territories that fall under the BOA’s jurisdiction.”

Personally think it just sounds better for marketing

I think it’s brilliant and it’s created this real team ethic that Spurs the rest on. They aren’t individual athletes doing their own sports they all cheer each other on and they are team GB, proud to represent their nation and doing a brilliant job.

seeing jade jones etc at the swimming that’s what it about.

I agree, Team GB emphasises that the Olympics may be a collection of individual sports but we are one team.

Oh and I see we've took a sailing gold from the Kiwis :)

I agree. It's sickening corporate shytespeak.

Its catchy. I think it has been marketed really well.

I would never use it but I'm not sure I am the target audience.

The improvement since Atlanta has been brilliant, especially since London 2012. I always used to think as a nation(s) we had a go at most sports and excelled in none but every Olympics now i am more and more impressed at what talent we have. We may have the facilities but for the population to be that high in the medal table surrounded by the giants of USA, China, Russia etc is fantastic.

This is true. We are 5th in the medals table based if you only include official countries. Which is pretty impressive very our size. We are behind Australia though. Which is very impressive for their size!

There was a great documentary on BBC before the Games started called Gold rush, the Chase for Olympic Glory. It covers the history of GB sport since Atlanta 1996 when we won just 1 gold medal. National Lottery was used to fund UK sport and identify what we had to do to increase our medal performance in various sports. From 20 medals in 2000 up to 60 plus in Rio. A complete change in attitudes to a winning mentality and professionalism

Yep, British athletes were essentially amateur competing against other nations whose athletes were full-time so essentially professional. The talent in the country was always there, but the set-up was way behind in equipment, training, coaching and science.

8th fastest of all time for Hodgkinson.
Incredible performance by Keely and such a shame she ran against a remarkable athlete otherwise she would have been a sudden overnight gold medalist super star. Silver though way beyond expectations as was the performance. Fitting on the site of another legendary woman’s British 800m performance 57 years ago.
