I used to love playing Subbuteo with my dad when I was a kid, when I got quite good at it I would often find my dad had pocketed 2-3 players without me knowing the cheating beggar!

Super Striker was all thud and blunder. Not a patch on the art and subtlety of Subbuteo. Flicking a player in an arc to keep possession and then a little nudge to lay it off to a team mate. Messi on felt.

I remember it used to make a constant really loud droning noise which sounded almost operatic if you were winning, getting beat however, and the noise would build constantly until you exploded into a fit of rage (and sometimes violence).

Subbuteo was great. Apart from having to iron the pitch every time you played it.

I loved Subbuteo, saved up all my paper round money just to buy a score board and some extras like St John’s Ambulance (with stretcher) and cameramen. Great for rainy days although we had plenty of days during the summer holidays when it came in handy.
