Stop the excuses

We are destined for midtable mediocrity
Midtable, quite possibly, mediocrity?

Less than a month ago we beat a very good Leicester side, we demolished Preston 4 nowt and gave a very good Leeds side a right good game to lose by an offside goal. Bad day at the office today. And even so they scored from a horrible deflection to break the deadlock without having so much as troubled Dieng previously. Accusing players of "not caring" just sounds like petulant entitlement. The only thing that annoys me was that it was a terrible spectacle as a game.

Hull on Wednesday

One final remark on Ipswich, very like Luton last season, difficult to beat, well organised and awful to watch.

Leeds could have put 6 past us the scoreline flattered us massively

That team had a RB playing out of position, a CB nowhere near match fit, and a second choice front 3. When everyone is fit half of todays team are just squad players. With a full squad this side shouldn’t be too far from the top 6
Well it’s an almighty 3 points away as things stand.

Smith
McNair
Lenihan
Hackney
O’Brien
Jones
McNair
McGree

It’s not excuses, is it.
Only one of McNair (despite him being in your list twice) or Lenihan makes the first XI, possibly neither if RVDB plays alongside Clark as possibly our best CB pairing.

Smith would be behind Dijksteel at RB for me.

OBrien likely won’t be in the first XI in front of Hackney and club captain Howson

Jones, McGree and Hackney are the only guaranteed starters in that list for me.

I think some fans find the reality of where we are difficult to see, we're significantly weaker team than last season and we have a like of injuries to add to that.

But we're still capable of sneaking a play off place, along with many other teams around us, more so if we can get the likes of McGree back and maybe add a couple in the window.

You've convinced me, we're cack. I must have misinterpreted our performance and the chances we created against a far better team than Ipswich. I could have sworn that LL could have had four or five in the first half! Thank goodness you're here...

I shall leave you to your righteous misery. Enjoy!

It’s all about how you view it though isn’t it?

How do you quantify effort? What is it you’re looking for?

I must admit, I didn’t see many players sacking it off today. I just seen a group of players struggling to click, under-performing vs. Usual levels.

We struggled to produce a consistent threat because as a team we weren’t very balanced. Lacked pace and a cutting edge and we were just a yard off the pace.

I would have liked to have seen him bring Coburn on and go 2 up top, but beyond that the bench was threadbare. Carrick’s options were limited.

Our squad is of a level (even when at full strength) where we will have these days. We are amongst many clubs who are all vying for those play off positions. We’ll have good days and bad.

I’ve watched teams sack it off before. Today didn’t feel like one of those moments.
We never stopped trying

There was a very visible lack of fight .... seemed low on confidence. Greenwood and Crooks seemed really not interested. With many key players out a defeat would not have been an issue against a very tight and youthful tractors but the lack of effort and end product was woeful

I was watching on a stream and went to carry on decorating when the first goal went in as I could tell from the start we weren't going to score. We're really missing Hackney, who carries the ball from midfield and we missed Jones, who despite his faults worries defenders and gets in behind. Neither Greenwood, Lath nor Rodgers have the experience/quality (yet) to show for the ball or hold up play on a regular basis and it's neither Howson's nor Barlaser's natural game to make the play, as Chaplin does for Ipswich. The only way we might catch them now is if he gets injured. Players like that make teams tick. Hackney is getting near to that category for us; he's young still though, so will have bad games.
We need Hackney and McGree back badly, though Jones back will help, and McNair had been outstanding before his injury. Clarke at the back, especially trying to play out worries me - you can see he wants to hoof it. We need defenders comfortable with Carrick's system. VdB & McNair looked good together - Dijksteel should be right back. I would put Coburn back in also, to help get is up the park. Lath has been a disappointment for me; I'm prepared to give him time but I think we may fall short of promotion this year unless we get a striker in with the right levels of composure/ruthlessness/smarts - not easy! That's the main area of concern for me. Apart from that, with all our players to choose from, I think we can properly compete with anyone in this league, Ipswich included, so I'm calm. Rodgers, Greenwood, Silvera are bench players for me, still learning how to harness their talent. It's rare a young player emerges fully-formed as it were, like Hackney has, which shows his quality - though he did learn his trade at struggling Scunthorpe.

As for slagging Carrick off, terrible. He is a class act. I love the way he completely fails to mention injuries, even though he must be tearing his hair out. I hope he is our manager for a very long time. I'm not especially confident for Hull or Swansea - who are both underrated sides for me - unless key players come back, though hopefully we'll have enough for Port Vale and then maybe by the semi, a few more back...? Imagine we get Newcastle and have Hackney, McGree, McNair and maybe a new non-cuptied striker in! Who knows?

Play-offs is our aim in the league now, but more than achievable. Leeds/Ipswich, ourselves, Southampton and West Brom.

Ipswich gave us a perfect object lesson in how to play out from the back. No sign of a CB standing still with the ball wondering what to do next, or a keeper waiting for ever to be closed down followed by a panicky pass to a full back who gives it straight back. And the circle starts again. Their execution of the same tactic was night and day superior.

I think this sums it up. Most of the players just aren't very good.

A lot of the new or recalled players are young and experienced. When they've featured in a stronger team, they've done well. Like Greenwood, VDV, Coburn and to a lesser extent Rogers, during our run when we won 6 in a row, and 8 in 10.
Football fans are too binary in the way they judge players. It's rarely as simple as bad/good, there's loads of different factors that can affect how a player performs.
I just think get behind whoever is wearing the shirt and hope they do well. Especially when it's a young player.

Exactly right, they always had a spare man and we made morsy look like beckenbauer with our half arsed attempt at a press today. As has been said above it appeared that we weren’t bothered, the players through a lack of effort and the manager for condoning it with a lack of action from the bench and not calling the team out for it afterwards. MC calls it the same after every defeat but we can see the times when we were unlucky due to stupid mistakes and the likes of yesterday where we were nowhere near.
