I'm going to challenge you on this. I don't really see any downsides to our club (or fanbase? Depending on the funding?) letting a former player know the regard they're held in by commissioning a statue whilst they're still alive.

Suppose it was Juninho, or someone like that, wouldn't that be a lovely moment? Isn't it a bit gloomy and morbid to be coy about it until tragedy strikes? Doesn't waiting for the player to no longer be with us also guarantee that a lot of the fans it would matter to most won't be around to enjoy it either?
 
A mural depicting the 86 team would be lovely. I personally like the image of the players in the director's box after the 87 promotion winning game against Wigan.
Rioch should have a stand named after him and a statue.

Clough doesn't warrant one I don't think. Not for his Boro achievements anyway. And I don't really care what he did at Forest or Derby.
Albert Park seems right, to recognise a successful man's link to the town but not specifically the club. If he hadn't done so well in management it wouldn't even be a discussion.

Reading this thread I wonder if it's the other way around. If he didn't have the great management record and the higher profile would it be easier for everyone to just agree what a glorious goalscorer for the club...? :unsure:

There you go. And what's the harm in that? I think he'll have been 80(?) or thereabouts when it was unveiled. So hardly unlikely to ruin his reputation with boro fans by suddenly putting in duff performances... 😅🤪

If we were going to say no statues while someone is still active in the game I'd agree. So maybe a no to McClaren and Southgate. What if Southgate goes and manages the geordies next and wins them the champions league or something? 🤢

Of course we can agree he was a fantastic goalscorer. But does that justify a statue? I don't think the Albert Park statue was commissioned purely because of his Boro goals.
What about Fenton & Peacock? Both great Boro goalscorers, and in Fenton's case achieved in the top division.

An apology would be a good start, but obviously you think it is ok to call someone a t wat and have no repercussions.

But you know what, I am not going to let a daft get like you get to me. I am 5 weeks into an 8 week holiday in France, I have been out on my boat fishing all afternoon and now I’m finishing the day with a Pastis.

You get all hot and bothered under the collar regarding Cloughy whilst I chill out in the evening sun.

I just can’t believe admin let you get away with this.

The statue recognises a footballing legend's links to Middlesbrough. Albert Park is the best place for it as it recreates his regular walk to training.
But he is a legend because of his managerial achievements. Without those he would be our equivalent of Wolves' Steve Bull. Loads of goals outside of the top division but unproven at a higher level.

I suppose it shows the lack of upbringing that you can’t apologise when in the wrong. Oh well.

I am listening to Harry Pearson's book 'The Farther Corner' and he describes some of the issues caused and faced whilst at the Boro. I knew the players had signed a petition to remove the captaincy from Clough, stating he was a big head and was pushing better placed players out of the way so he could score. I didn't know the fans had taken the player's side and booed Clough during the following game. Cloughy responded by banging a hat-trick in and all from out of the box. Typical Clough ;).

I also didn't know that Clough had submitted a transfer request every season he was at the Boro and had been linked with Everton and another Lancashire club before eventually signing for Sunderland.

Pearson's chapter doesn't paint Clough's time at the club in good light.
 
You don't build statues. You nick them from people who know how to build statues, like the Greeks or Italians. We should have lifted a few when we played egaleo or Roma. Doubt we'll have that opportunity again.
 
Next statue should be Camsell absolutely.

After that take your pick from these and build the avenue of legends around this:
