Steffen….behave yourselves.

Let's face it goalkeeper is a thankless position with no room for error and plenty for criticism. Listening to Boro fans down the years I conclude that they'd only really be happy with a goalkeeper who saves EVERY shot and who comes screaming out of his goal every time the ball is vaguely near the penalty area.🙂

The guy plays well - he gets credit and praise. The guy plays badly- he gets questioned and criticism. Frankly, as a keeper you are probably more exposed to opposite views - isn’t that what’s happening here?

Seems a cardinal sin to some on here for any criticism levelled. Can’t work this is a problem

Except that's not what's happening here.

It's more like the guy plays well, he gets credit and praise. The guy plays badly, he gets questioned and criticism, and people demanding he is dropped and sent back to where he came from.

Not quite the same is it?

Shay Given and Darren Randolph were unanimous fan favourites I think

Ridiculous to criticise him for passing it out from the back. He's doing it because he'll have been told to do it.

If Carrick wanted him to clear his lines because of the press, that's exactly what he'd have done.

Do people really think the coach leaves it up the keeper to decide?

It's how Carrick wants to play. If Steffan isn't here next year I'm pretty sure his replacement will do exactly the same. People are going to have to get used it.
Well yes that’s part of it, but do you think players always follow the manager 100%

I can’t believe the manager would ask him to play the pass even it wasn’t on, as he did several times yesterday

Ultimately decision making will always end up with a player. Mistakes happen in games and Steffan made a lot of them yesterday.

A manager can not control every action a player makes

It’s also a concern that carrick didn’t change it up when it was clear we struggle to break the press

We are all waiting for team line up next match to see what carrick is made of will he pull the trigger on him for it or wait till cup game where he will be gone & forgotten about thank god.

Of course he won't drop Steffen - after one game - that would be ridiculous.

Yeah, Robert's last cup game was a roaring success.

Steffen will start on Boxing Day.

All this talk about him being careless with the ball at his feet is absolute nonsense, that's the way modern football is played now, invite the press and trust the players are good enough to beat it and exploit the space. We also dont have the players to go long. Forss won the square root of F*ck all so lumping it would have done us no good what so ever, it would have just gave them the ball back quicker!!!!!

Regarding the goals, I would agree he is a little bit on his heels for the first two goals, not necessarily his fault per se, but big saves in those moments are the saves that win points/games and for me he doesn't do enough of them often enough to be considered anything other than average. And we are not paying for average

It is nonsense that he is careless with the ball at his feet. Deliberately reckless would be a better description. There's drawing players towards you, and then there's waiting until they are on top of you. The first is sensible, the second is foolish and Steffen errs towards the second. He always just seems like he's trying too hard to be cool, like a man in sunglasses on the tube.

Steffan did get lucky against Luton when a LT player blocked a clearence and the ball went a few feet wide.

To concede from a goal kick and easy back pass is criminal. Many teams try it and I don't understand the logic especially when the opposition press you very quickly.

Against Burnley Steffan to me mis judged the danger from the cross for their second goal. To me a Championship keeper should have been able to see the cross had a reasonable chance of creeping in and needed more action to keep it out. There was a risk that the Burnley forward could get a touch to deflect it in, but to me the biggest risk was the cross itself going in, which it did just.

The first goal shot was well taken by the Burnley player, the biggest issue in prevention was our outfield players who didn't do enough to block the shot or force the Burnley player onto his weaker right foot.

Their third goal was a very poor header from Howson.

If he's so good he wouldn't be playing for a champ team & he would have went to world cup. He starts trying to playing the ball against opposition when he should be kicking it into row Z . He will cost us more points if he is not moved on in January.

So your argument that he isn’t good enough to play in the Championship is that he plays in the Championship?

I haven't read any responses to this original post but my two cents is that the response from some Boro "fans" on Saturday was horrendous. Talk about knee-jerk.

3-1 defeat at Burnley with a couple of individual mistakes.. Don't worry about it, lads. We'll still get promoted under Carrick.
