Stadium Sponsorship

As an aside I remember being told maybe 10 years ago that sponsors wanted the complete name - ie as at Huddersfield - John Smiths. Or Bolton historically The Reebok. You can see this in cricket and rugby union as well can't you. So it might not be BT Cellnet Riverside Stadium this time but just the O2 Stadium - perhaps they would throw in wifi. ;)
I hope not - I'm on O2 and can I hell get a signal in the stadium - especially at half-time when everybody hits the airwaves .. mind you tho, if it encourages them to install an antenna at the ground I might be tempted

The bulkhaul riverside stadium. The amount of money Gibson puts in to run the club wouldn't it be better to sponsor the stadium for that amount of money. Would it help the club with FFP? At least it would look like Gibson was getting somthing for the money he puts in written off. Not sure even if it aloud.

Not allowed, otherwise Newcastle would now be playing in the Aramco Arena and being sponsored about 2bill per season.

I remember when our sponsorship was coming to an end and Cellnet has changed to BT Cellnet and then to O2 and there were quite a few fans really critical of having an 0-2 stadium.. saying it would be bad look and make us look small time and pathetic.. lol
the horrific proposition of having o2 on our shirts aswell.. how embarrassing.

Obviously the sponsorship deal wasn't extended and they went on to sponsor Arsenal's Invincible and renamed the Millennium Dome.

There seems to be a crackdown on gambling sponsors on shirts coming on the horizon... I could see us going for something like the 32Red Stadium or the Unibet Riverside Stadium

I don't think you can do that and use it against FFP
I think you can but it can only be market value. You can't use it as a way to fudge FFP but legitimate sponsorship values are fine.

Bulkhaul would only make sense from an FFP perspective though, it wouldn't bring more money into the club and reduce the amount Gibson has to contribute as he's taking it from himself. It is basically the same as calling it the Middlesbrough FC Riverside Stadium which, being sponsorless, is nearly the same thing.

I have no idea what sort of sums are offered for a stadium sponsorship but maybe instead of looking at what it is worth per year the cumulative effect needs to be taken into account. If it is £1m a season then it isn't a huge amount but over 5/10 years that adds up. It could also be offset against what fans are paying for tickets. Any money not coming into the club and needing to be taken from fans or from Gibson himself is just missed opportunities.

Getting the right one is important because you don't want to end up with a Toughsheet Stadium like Bolton.

I'd say ours is one those stadiums that wouldn't be negatively impacted by just having a sponsor as the stadium name.
Riverside is such a generic name that it would be no great loss.

Obviously not if the sponsor was something awful though.

I very much doubt we are turning away companies that want to pay meaningful money to sponsor the stadium.

I think there are only 4 Premier League clubs with a sponsors' name attached to their stadium and 5 in the Championship. Many of those are sponsored by a company with close links to their owner (e.g. Etihad, bet365, KingPower).

Notably this doesn't include St James' Park, as you would have assumed PIF would use the opportunity to pump money into the club this way if they were allowed.

I can only conclude that companies generally don't see stadium sponsorship as value for money and clubs presumably aren't prepared to rebrand their stadium every few years - at considerable cost - for a relatively minor sum of money.
Sponsorship of grounds has been a major way to get round FFP it seems hence owners sponsoring their own stadiums as you rightly point out.

We seem to have led the way in the past at raising funds through sponsorship.. one of the first teams to go for shirt sponsorship.. stadium sponsorship.. I'm guessing we are one of the few clubs (championship and above) that just sticks to having one in house retail outlet.

I think that's why this latest price rise irked me so much.. surely the next big thing is just around the corner?

Middlesbrough Red Bulls anybody?
