Spike Armstrong's record of appearances

305 consecutive league games and 358 consecutive games in all competitions between March 1972 and August 1980. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

This a rare occurrence these days. Brad Friedel made 310 consecutive Premier League appearances, but the Premier record for an outfield player is 164 by Frank Lampard. The all time record holder is Harold Bell for Tranmere Rovers between 1946 and 1955 - 375 consecutive league games and 401 games in all competitions. I would have thought these days with more european football, and more internationals played, that someone might have got near, but no.

Was Spike supremely fit, canny in the tackle, or plain lucky???

Don't forget he played in 99% of preseason friendlies, pre season tournaments such as, as the Texaco cup & ASC over 2 seasons, remarkable achievement really

He started his amazing run at home to Aston Villa on the 24th March 1973 & scored the goal that guaranteed us promotion on the 23rd March 1974 ๐Ÿ‘

Players would play through injuries so much more in those days and 'have an injection' so they could play which is why many of them ended up barely able to walk.

His autobiography says as much. He's not in very good nick at the moment, age aside.

Thirty nine & a half years since he last kicked a ball for us and I've yet to see a better player in a MFC shirt.

Short in stature, but heart of a lion. Low centre of gravity, quick and great balance. My first ever Boro shirt had number 11 in black sewn on the back in his honour.
Great player.
