I’ve always been a huge fan of Rhodes and was delighted when we signed him but it’s fair to say that things didn’t really work out here.

Yesterday showed that his eye for goal hasn’t waned. As he slotted his shot past Daniel’s and into the Boro net.

So just what did go wrong at the Boro and why were we so keen to off load a genuine goal scorer.

Exactly.

Rhodes is 32 and was never quick to begin with, but he looked like Usain Bolt compared to our players yesterday on the break.

Perhaps like many players he has a level and it is in fact League One. To play well at Blackburn things had clicked for him, just like they inexplicably did for Gestede in the decent season he had there.

I will always be thankful to Rhodes for the goals he scored en route to promotion, but he is a horse for a different course.

We bought a player who had consistently scored goals as part of a partnership and then tried to play him in a system not suited to his skills. He also seems to be a player who is either in a good groove and unstoppable or out of form and easy to manage out of a game. One of a long list of strikers since 2000 who was bought for one set of skills, but then asked to play a completely different way.

Its also mind-boggling that having sold him on to Sheff Weds we then spent significant money on someone he did work with effectively - Rudy Gestede.

According to a man I know who lives near Rhodes. It never got going as he wasn't a player wanted by Karanka.

Personally I don't think he was brilliant when he did play. He missed quite a few chances but also scored some important goals.

We had both on them the books at the same time admittedly not for long though

We wouldn’t have been promoted automatically without him. We sold him at pretty much cost price to Sheff Wed too. Far from our worst piece of business.
