Allow me to introduce you to the Chicago tradition that is "dibs". Most downtown houses only have street parking, so when you dig your car out of 3 feet of snow, go to work and find someone else has parked in the space you've cleared it's not a good feeling. Dibs means putting something (traditionally a chair) in the space to "reserve" it for when you return. Anyone moving your dibs marker runs the risk of having their car vandalized or buried in snow. Some districts in the city have now banned the practice after fights broke out over the right to park in the spot.
You've probably heard this word used in a related but not exactly identical context. In Chicago, it has a very specific meaning in.
