Snooker/Billiards/Pool...

I played billiards for years in the boys leagues. I think if you initially learn billiards, snooker comes much easier, and then pool is an absolute piece of p*ss (the size of those pockets!!)
Imagine kids today going to a social club on a Saturday morning to play boys billiards? I used to love it. We even once found some polaroid's of girls naked on the tables on the bar. Strange times back then :D

I heard back from the Coulby Parkway Social Club, a fiver membership then I can play for free. Maybe the next time I go to Tesco, I'll fit in a few games.

Room21 is good, it's basically Riley's (which is what used to be there).

I used to play in the Billingham pool league about 15-20 years ago, held my own in Div.2 but some of the standard in Div.1 was beyond me.

Was in Vilnius recently and there were sports bars all over the place with loads of pool tables (and darts boards), was excellent.

I started playing Billiards in the Sacred Heart Youth Club (now closed down). We used to play in the Boys Billiards league as well (the only youth club). Since then I played for the Labour Club / Middletown Social (closed down), Clarence Club (closed down), Westgarths (closed down), Coop Sports (closed down), Dormans Club (dropped out league) and now Jack Hatfields. I think I am a bit if a Jonah!

As far as playing snooker in Middlesbrough now, a lot of my mates have joined the Conservative Club near the Little Theatre. It is not political like it used to be. I haven’t been in for years, the last time in the 1980s when you had to wear a tie and a bloke used to set the balls up and shout you when it was your turn to play! However, I think it still has five snooker tables.

UK Championship coming up Samba 👍
I've had a daft fiver each way on Barry Hawkins at 40/1 I think he's in pretty good form at the moment....A bit of value in the price at least 👍

I used to play to a very good standard of pool. Played for a few different pubs but mainly with the same lads for 40 + yrs. Played for the town and the county. Had an England trial in my 20s but didn't get in.Loved it when I was younger. Around age 50's I still Played well but would lose the odd game I knew I should have won. It drove me mad so I just jacked it in around 8 yrs ago. Not picked a cue up since. Still go occasionally to watch a few of the lads who still play.
Funnily enough I couldn't play snooker to save my life. Had one break of 34 and other than that I think my best was 16.

I used to play bar billiards at uni. You don't see bar billiards tables these days. I could stay on the table all evening by winning.

Very average at snooker, pool or billiards though.
The Pied Piper at Osmotherley had a bar billiards table, I'm surprised other pubs didn't have them, took up far less room than a pool table.

My local in Reading had one when I was down there, great game.

Used to play a lot of snooker and billiards back in the day, at Potters upstairs in the Dundas and Inn of the Park, also ESton Sports centre had quite a few tables, wasn’t a bad player but hung my queue up a few years ago but clubs are the place to play, a couple of tables in my club the ESton and Normanby.

Another shout for Room 21 in Stockton. Nice environment and if you ask at the bar they’ll tell you about the next available tournaments. Very good players though and you need to know the official rules.

Followed me papa’s footsteps and played boy’s billiards for about a year or two for the Eston and Normanby social club, won an inter-club tournament (beat one of the Binghams - first to 100 where I started +60 and I think he was about -100 or -200 😂 won a trophy for that). Neil ,the bloke who ran it, was a great lad, giving up his weekend mornings to teach a handful of kids how to play, fair play to him and I wonder how he is getting on these days (If anyone knows?)

Then at 18 I spent a drunken Sunday night in the Parklands Pub where I decided to join the pool tourney for the night and ended up winning it, then joined their team for the next year or two - where I think I won one or two matches total.
Was never very good, but I enjoyed it.

Wouldnt mind getting my own queue again and having some games when I can, but that’s not likely any time soon.

So I’ve downloaded 8Ball Pool and a few snooker games on my iPad 🤣

I learned to play billiards with my father at the old Erimus club. In those days, the fifties, it was just as common to see billiards played as snooker. When on holiday in India much later I played snooker with a local who asked me where I came from. When I told him Middlesbrough he immediately replied ‘the English home of billiards’.

Some of the best times I had as a kid was playing in the Teesside Boys billiards league in the middle/late 80's. Every Saturday/Sunday morning walking to the Billingham Social Club to play matches and practice. I enjoyed playing Billiards a lot more than snooker. Recently found my billiard balls in the loft earlier this year 😊

Played (and got a big beating) from some of the best players, Peter Gilchrist, Mike Russell, Dave Cousier, Mike Dunn amongst a few others. Also played in the Thursday night mens league which was fun as a 15yr old 😁

Teesside was the hotbed of Billiards in those days.
