Shoplifting

Could some normally law abiding citizens decide that things are just a joke in terms of pricing by the big supermarkets who are making hundreds of millions of pounds worth of profit so taking certain things is becoming more of the norm….
As people are struggling it cannot be right that the likes of Tesco don’t forego a huge chunk of profits for the ‘people’ 🤔

Surely it would be better that people didn't steal and prices could just be lower instead of them having to pass the cost of stolen goods on to the paying customers. All of the cost of replacing stolen items, increased security equipment/staff etc gets passed on to the rest of us.

Places like a supermarket might lose out on a small value at a time but the people committing the crimes will probably be doing it in multiple locations. They'll be hitting every supermarket and retail store on rotation and possibly doing whatever other crimes that pay well in between. It won't be a one-time thing. If the police were involved they can prevent those sort of people from being able to commit repeat crimes. Individual retailers can't do much about it. There will be some one-off criminals and some people that are just doing it so they don't starve but the majority will be more organised, systematic and repetitive.

We shouldn't all have to pay to subsidise the criminals. I'd rather that money was being spent to reduce prices or to increase police resources to reduce crime happening in the first place.

The left winger in me does appreciate that lots of people are criminals because they are a victim of their environment and if the system we have in place was better then fewer people would turn to crime but I also know there are a lot of people that don't care and just commit crimes because they know they can get away with it and they don't care. Especially when they think stealing from a big business is a victimless crime. It isn't because those businesses just pass those costs on to their customers.
