Scathing attack on government Covid-19 response

Containment looks to have worked short term in some countries, the question is how will it pan out long term with so few of the population immune to the virus. Only time will tell which countries are doing the right thing.

I see Ann Widdecombe has weighed in with her expertise. Apparently this coronavirus scare will be like AIDS, something 'not as devastating as feared'.

Just the 32 million deaths then, but mainly minorities, so that's ok.

You have previous and your comment was inflammatory, biased - based on posting history - and a poor opinion stated as a fact. That enough.

Not really. It says more about you than it does me, not to mention being entirely inaccurate.

Are you referring to male to male sexual contact.

Italy deaths and cases rise dramatically
The number of deaths has increased from 1,016 on Thursday to 1,266. 250 in 24 hours
Cases in the country have risen from 15,113 to 17,660 - an increase of 2547

Looks like that lockdown approach is working well for them
You do realise it can take 3 weeks to die from coronavirus, so deaths are likely to rise immediately following a lockdown

Peter Jukes former member of the Labour Party and journalist for the new statesman... no agenda there

Stephen Colegrave loads of anti Tory articles by him in thee byline times.

No surprise linking them 2 and their agenda

Seriously?
This is a hardly a political fight, it's about potential deaths being averted.
I hope the government measures work, but from my point of view based on what I have seen and read from other countries approaches then I'm for a far more aggressive approach.
Commonsense would indicate that the best way to combat an infectious disease is to limit the potential for infection.
If the government approach is wrong and the infections increase exponentially in the same way they have in Italy then it is highly likely that the NHS could become overwhelmed and that in turn would possibly lead to more deaths simply because those that could be treated won't be because the resources are too stretched.
Hindsight might be able to score political points, but it won't bring anyone back from the dead.
Hopefully the concept of social distancing will get traction within the population and that will take the decision out of the government's hands.

Everyone knows the NHS is already overstretched, particularly those who work in it, or know someone who works within the NHS. WE ARE ALREADY AT BREAKING POINT so it is highly likely we are going to end up in a similar situation to Italy where we end up putting people into places other than a hospital to try and treat those who are desperately ill. Ten years of Tory austerity and under funding have brought this upon us.

Upshot is we don't really know. Graphs that show an exponential acceleration of infection are simple extrapolations. Might happen, might not. For every "expert" saying it will there are "experts" saying it won't. What I take from it is that the real risk is to the elderly and the imuno-compromised. If you have someone in one of those groups in your family (as I do) then you need to take steps yourself to mitigate their risk. You need to keep those people safer by reducing their contact with lots of people and making sure that you are as careful as you can be not to bring teh infection to them.

Panic buying will not even help yourself. (Fukk nose what ANYONE is going to do with five hundred bog rolls and two tons of pasta?) For what it is worth I think that the government has it just about right. I suspect that we will see school and college closures some time next week and further containment through travel restrictions in the week after. I am not convinced that making these calls earlier will significantly reduce the impact of the virus.

Be safe everyone.
