Ryan Giles signs..

The problem I see is one that some people have put as a positive. That is both full backs high up the pitch whipping crosses in.

If we have this are we then playing with a back 2? I know Liverpool won the championship playing this way a few years ago but teams have sussed them out now and they keep very few clean sheets.

When Giles was last here we conceded a lot of goals to crossfield passes dropped in behind him and he really is not very good at heading these away. Indeed he is the only man who seems to lose height when he jumps.

Let Hull keep him and yes he may set up a goal or 2 against us but I do think we had him in a very good team and still didn't get promoted because of the silly goals we kept conceeding.

Luton had quality players last season, and yet he was benched after a few games, then loaned out after 4 months, so that scraps your argument, unless Wolves Luton and possibly now Hull are all wrong about him? Rob Edwards took a few games to suss him out.

Unless we are going to play him L/M? that might work, but again he cannot defend, he ball watches when out of possession.
You think Luton's players are considered high quality in the Premier League? Luton averaged 41% possession in the PL last season, they predominantly played on the back foot. We know that doesn't play to his strengths.
Boro dominate possession and have higher quality players when considering the standard of the league.

So that doesn't scrap my argument. It was always likely Giles was going to struggle in Luton's team. I (and most others on this board) predicted that he would struggle there. That doesn't mean he's a bad signing for Boro in the Championship. Much better player than Engel. Haven't seen enough of Bangura but from what I have seen I would say Giles is a much better technical footballer whereas Bangura is very athletic so gives you something different.
If Carrick wants us to get back to where we were in 22/23 where we were better at retaining possession then Giles is a good signing. Particularly if McGree is staying and will be starting on the left side of the forward line. They compliment each other really well down that side.

As pointed out Giles knocks a wonderful ball in, he can do it on the run and his dead ball are pretty much on the money..he keeps possession well, good first touch...Lath when he gets an understanding with him would have a field day.

But he is poor out of possession, players run I behind him, he struggles to head a ball, I seen him a few times mistime his jump, terrible one on one defending he doesn't get his body the right shape to show the man down the line or inside..we have 2 left backs and have McGree and signed the Dutch lad who usually plays left...can't see this happening.

Confused. How can we sign him when he’s signed permanently for Hull on a 3 year deal?

Apparently Hull were obliged to buy him off Luton as part of last seasons loan deal. They gambled on getting promoted and lost.

Luton don't want him back, and Hull can't afford to keep him, hence he's been put up for immediate sale.

Giles' quality comes either from crossing from deep, or running on to the ball and attacking the space vacated by the LM (mcgree,Ramsay)

Having him play LM would be completely pointless. It wouldn't utilise his skills and would change the way Carrick wants us to play.

Its like calling for a centre back to play up front because he scores a few headed goals from corners!

Bangura looked decent as a left winger in the 20 mins he played there before getting injured. Perhaps either of those two could play further forward?
As I've said above, Carrick doesn't really play with a "winger" on the left. He want someone to come inside and overload the central area, creating space for a overlapping fullback. IF he played a traditional stay wide type winger on the left, he would want something entirety different from what Jones offers on the right.

Correct. He likes his LB to provide width on the left and Giles does that really well. He's generally played with right-footed LFs to date who come inside and play narrower.

If he played a traditional left winger, he would play Forss on the right with Ayling providing the width. He would reverse the system

He could, but Jones has to play for me. One of the first names on the team sheet.

Clearly an obligation by Hull. However they are spinning it to make it look like it wasn’t to save face all round. No signing interview no pics holding up the shirt no pics at training etc just nothing.

Not a chance are we allowing Hull to make a profit they are going to be losing a chunk on a sale to us. If they’ve paid 4 we have probably offered around 3.
I reckon even less. I'd say it'll be 2 with a promotion bonus.

I called what would happen. Luton would play him, his side of the pitch would be leaky, he would get dropped for someone less attacking, but steady and resilient without the ball.

It was totally the wrong club for him at the wrong time, and totally predictable.

My opinion is don't sign him.
Very good when he was with us but as others have said defensively he is not upto it, and it dosent sit well he has failed at the two other clubs.

he will be far better in this team with Clarke playing alongside him as left footed cover.

I know he is not the best defensively but he isn’t going to be up against real quality every week .. and his strengths and contributions to the team far outweigh the weaker defensive side to his game. That said he is still more than adequate left back defensively for this league.

Hull are in a bit of bother are they? I’m sure people on here were analysing their finances saying it’s all fine and that we should be doing the same.
