Rudy Gestede

I wouldn't pick this team. I'd have 4 solid citizens at the back if possible, Clayton holding with Howson next to him, Roberts behind Gestede and Spence and Coulson pushed up into a front 3/midfield 5.

i don’t think we have 4 solid citizens really , until Ayala and Fry came back. And we have both took Howson away from RB . Think that’s the best defence we can hope for since we have both took Howson out of the defence

Probably a fair point. Maybe McNair at RB and Johnson at LB?

Johnson definitely isn't a solid citizen at LB but I don't think you have much choice with Coulson playing further forward.

maybe or keep Howson RB and go with Clayton and Saville in the middle and Spence on the bench. I’m now off the opinion we must keep playing Wing as he is scoring goals. I wasn’t of this opinion previously.

for me it’s either

Pears

Spence
Shotton
Moukoudi
Johnson

Howson
Saville

Roberts
Wing
Coulson

Gestede

or

Pears

Howson
Shotton
Moukoudi
Johnson

Clayton
Saville

Roberts
Wing
Coulson

Gestede

We played really well at Preston with Gestede up front and Fletcher and Tav playing off him which is similar to last night except it was Coulson instead of Fletcher. We also played 5 at the back. I would go back to that sort of formation. Our midfield don't create enough, we don't need 3 average CMs. Play 2 of them and push the wide players further forward and a bit more central. Wing backs can provide the width and then we have 3 attacking players on the pitch and are safe in the middle with 3 CBs and 2 CMs. 3421

Spence
Howson
Ayala
Mokoudi/Fry
Coulson/Johnson

Clayton/Mcnair
Saville/Wing/Morrison

Tav/Roberts

As much as I think Wing shows his inexperience, you simply have to keep him and Coulson as high up the pitch as possible as they are the only two who will take risks to try and create something. Wing will always have a pot-shot and Coulson runs at people.
I'd drop McNair as I think his brand of trying to buy free kicks is not what we need as he surrenders possession too easily by doing it.
We've seen in flashes how we can threaten if we move the ball quickly, we absolutely need to now go down fighting and attacking like that as much as possible.
While relegation will be disastrous, if we really are determined to play a more attacking brand of football that has to start now even if it sees us losing games.
If we sit back and play it slow we don't have the guile to break teams down and form suggests we'll struggle to pick up the necessary points that way anyway.

Well said. Coulson wing and Roberts behind big Rudy is the way forward for me

I have got a feeling Roberts may be back at least on bench on Saturday
I'd be loathe to rush him back just in case he breaks down again and is out for the season, but those three might well be able to create enough chances to save us.
Bottle and risk-taking might keep us up, caution won't.

So frustrating watching Gestede last night.

He was brilliant. He caused them so many problems. He won nearly every battle in the air and he brought players into play.

Then to top it off, he scored.

The frustrating part is - where on earth has this been for the last 2/3 years?

He played very good at Preston this season too...then since has done nothing.

If he plays like he did last night, for the rest of the season, then we'll be fine.

He's a tool ... in a third hand tool-box missing lots of important tools. He's like a big wrench you can sometimes use as a hammer ... its satisfying when your ingenuity pays off ... but it rarely does and more often that not you end up breaking what you were trying to fix.

It's a fair point but right now I am not sure we have much choice.

Also: did anyone see a replay of the penalty incident on Gestede in the second half? Looked a penner to me.

completely agree. A good performance not quite as good as he was at Preston but still very good nonetheless. I got a couple of people questioning why I selected him for my team before the game which I understand but I had a feeling he was gonna score and play well.

Keep him in for Charlton and see what he can do again

Completely depends on whicg way we're going to play. There was a concerted effort to play high up the pitch and get lots of balls into the box. If we're going to try and pass our way through the centre of the pitch against Charlton, playing Gestede would be a mistake.

I'm still in Australia, so didn't see the match.
I'm really struggling to see how Gestede is playing any part for our team.
After Gibson's nonsense in blind support of Woodgate, I'm almost past caring, but Gestede being posed as a potential saviour is a tough one to swallow.

No saviour but he played well on Tuesday. Scored a goal, produced panic in their defence and held the ball up well. Had a good chance to shoot and score second half, but cut the ball back instead, was his only mistake.
