Rishi Sunak

Rishi is great for the headlines but when you look into his various schemes they have holes... big holes.

This VAT cut, Meal Deal, Stamp Duty announcement sounds great when you read the headlines but look into it and it's a very weak proposal.

Stamp Duty - could well increase house prices, also cause problems with new builds where deals have already been done but customer's cancel as they want better deals.

£1000 furlough bonus - it's not high enough to be worth it to business.

VAT - won't be passed on to the customer so won't encourage many people out - plus it's only for some businesses. Not on alcohol so wet pubs miss out totally.

Meal Deal - may encourage those who already go out to switch their day from Friday to Tuesday? Pubs near me aren't opening Mon to Wed anyway as it's traditionally quiet, so these pubs have to open to take advantage.

If you weren't going to spend £20 going out for a meal anyway because you are worried about the virus, your meal only costing you £10 won't encourage you.

What would encourage more people to get out and about spending money is a Track and Trace system with a working app that's proven to track 80% of contacts. Or some published, peer reviewed evidence on why it is safe to go out into pubs and sit indoors for 2 hours with other people. Or even accurate figures, published weekly, on how may positives are in your area.

In Hambleton it turns out we have not had a positive test in July. That's great news but it should be on the local news and everyone should be made aware of it. If there was a few positives we could be more cautious but now might be the time to enjoy a relatively virus free Hambleton.

I'd have liked to have see the £500 vouchers to spend on the high street for every adult in the UK - that would have made more of an economic impact than saving £20 off a meal that would still cost you £20 - £20 you might not have because you are on furlough or just been made redundant.

Was talking to a local businessman at the pub last night.
This £1000 bonus for retaining furloughed staff is a right problem.

He knows he has to lose people to survive but, it now makes sense, to lose some of those who have been working and keep those returning from furlough.

Presumably in Some cases the furloughed staff were chosen (in general) who were least vital to the business so letting go current full time staff means losing your best people for the sake of a grand?

No, not necessarily. Some people were given options where the only reason was a drop in output.
Some happy to stay on, some ok with furlough

I've zero inclination to sit inside a bar / restaurant, esp this winter when flu will be back also.. outdoors fine, but we'll spaced..

I did say some and sure thats not always going to be the case. If people do lose their job to another on the basis that the Government are paying their employer to retain that someone else then ...sad state of affairs.

Exactly this! Rishi Sunak is chashing headlines with grand sounding announcements. At the start of lockdown he stood and said to the nation "noone will lose out as a result of C19" a few days later 100's of thousends where cut off from furlough support, just because they changed jobs at the wrong time.

Fraud was the first excuse, then simply "trade offs". There has been loads of idea's put forward to help those left with nothing, but he's not interested. Instead just announces more gimmick schemes that sound good on paper.

Businesses aren't allowed the same number of people in as they were getting previously so this let's them stay open without having to raise prices. Otherwise they can't cover their costs.
I must have missed where the Chancellor announced this was a scheme for ailing businesses to receive a VAT break without passing it on to consumers whose income has been affected by Covid-19.

He is a complete fraud himself.
Who is going to pay the bill for all of this?
The Tories spent ten years banging on about the deficit but suddenly it doesn’t matter?
There is big trouble on the track ahead and he is not showing he has any kind of plan to balance the books.
Future PM?
On the basis of a wild incoherent spending spree for which a Labour Chancellor would have been put under house arrest?
There will be a day of reckoning for this.

If he was a labour chancellor would you be complaining in the same manner? Or is it because it’s a Tory chancellor doing something that you don’t expect that is the problem?

No not all, if it were a Labour Chancellor I would be asking the same question.
When Brown spent big after the crash he said at the time his plan was to instigate growth in the economy to get tax revenues back up as high as possible. Whether you agreed with it or not, he had a plan.
Rishi is like Santa at the Xmas party handing out expensive gifts with no idea how to pay the credit card bill at the end of January, or if he has a plan he hasn’t shared it with his funders - the taxpayers.

I look forward to December 2024 (or earlier, hopefully) when the outgoing Chancellor leaves a note for the incoming Labour Chancellor to the effect 'We found that magic money tree after all'.

If anyone has a 'playbook' that shows us how to recover economically from a lockdown that had already put thousands out of work and could end up costing millions their job feel free to share.

Fair do’s.... I would argue that at the moment it is all about trying to get the economy going and I suspect we will see in the bigger budgets to come more of a plan on how it will be covered... we will see though I suppose.

I just hope he does have a plan, I just have an uneasy feeling that he likes announcing good things with a smile on his face but no word of how it will be paid for. He’s very young and inexperienced for a job of that magnitude in unprecedented times like these.

If people don't want to return to restaurants and pubs then some will disappear. Those that people feel safe to return to will survive but customer demands may change.

Addressing the frills whilst letting the essential side of the economy fail isn't always the best way forward.

If you have a look around the area (and country) there's a lot of work to be done that would create millions of jobs. I'd sooner see the wastelands cleared up, new house, hospital and school building works commence, refreshing an out of date transport infrastructure, address food industry problems.

If they kick started it the hospitality sector would be able to look after itself.

They're just looking at headlines for now, not a good way to go.
