RIP Willie Whigham

Oh what a sad day. One of my favourite players as a kid as I watched him help us get promoted.
In the 70's I used to see him in the BSC canteen .He must have wondered who the idiot was who couldn't stop staring at him.
RIP Willie.
😭

Very sad. Loved seeing Willie, he was our No.1 when I first started going.

A lovely ugly bu99er,
you were number one in your day
with a face sent straight from Heaven
to scare star strikers away.

A skinny malinky gangler
sent doon from the lochs
with honours in keeping clean sheets
from the high school of hard knocks.

And I can still see you now
at halftime on the pitchside track
having a minute with the fans
sharing a fag and the crack.

Tipping over top corner scorchers,
a teddy boy, woodbined flyer,
palming away mam’s jokes about
a face to keep kids off the fire.

The Holgate has a new angel,
singing away in the dark.
He’s rough and he’s tough
and his voice is gruff –
St Willie Of Ayresome Park.

I don't know if he was our best ever keeper, though he was really good, but he was certainly the most memorable.

RIP Willie.

My lasting memory is of him letting the ball go between his legs and into our net at Roker Park (1968 or 1969 perhaps), I think it might have been a back pass as well.
One of my heroes but that memory still haunts me.
Yes that still sticks in my memory 71 in a 4-1 drubbing. My first keeper. Not the best in my time but certainly nowhere near the worst.RIP.

Remember hordes of Boro fans at the ZDS in 1990 singing his song outside a pub near Wembley as he was stood at the door laughing . RIP

"We've got Willie willie willie willie whigham in our goal, in our goal

Wiiiillie, Willie Whigham

Willie Whigham in our goal

Wiiiiillie, Willie Whigham, Willie Whigham in our goal...."

RIP Willie - a real character and good goalie. The look on your face after the own goal by Stuart Boam in front of the Holgate was priceless.
