Slight shock at this. When he was scoring for fun at 17, George Hardwick said in his EG column 'If I could be anyone else right now it would be Francis' (or similar). He had anticipated an incredible 20 year career.
Re the transfer fee, I thought I read at the time that the fee was reported as £1,250,000, with the previous record standing at £500,000 earlier that same season (David Mills).
Giuseppe Savoldi was the worlds first million pound transfer when he went from Bologna to Napoli in 1975. Trev was Britains first million pound player in 1979.
Fabulous footballer. Saw him outside the riverside at an U-23 game in 2005. We exchanged a hello. The family were impressed at how starstruck I was. RIP fella
There are very few goals I remember watching live on TV in the 70s but his diving header against Malmo where he landed on the shot putt circle and won them the European Cup is certainly one of them
He scored the most famous goal that I've ever missed. I was working in Munich in 1979 when Forrest played Malmo in the European Cup final at the Olympic Stadium. It was quite easy to get tickets for the Malmo end so a load of us from work went.
I was in a round and nipped off to the bar before half time to try and beat the rush. I just got over the back when I heard the goal go in.
RIP Trevor.
