RIP the Duke of Edinburgh

My Mrs thought he was funny - really liked him.
All said, he did a great 'job' within the confines he found himself.

On Sky News just now his 1st cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten said and I quote " He was very interested in pretty girls and all my girls are very pretty and when he sat with them at a meal he often asked them probing questions".

Oh dear.

Well now we know where Andrew gets it from

Feels like we are being told what to think, imagine how bad it'll be when the queen pops it, they'll probably turn the internet off for a fortnight (Actually that might be great)
Reading some of your posts on this thread, it might be something you should consider. You have got your point over, now why don’t you just leave it and keep your negative thoughts to yourself. 😔

Often have Classic FM on in the car, today on the way to Darlington there were 3 news bulletins about the event (and nothing else) and the music in between was Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, all the verses of Abide with Me and Purcell's When I am Laid in Earth . Talk about mawkish over the top.

Is there such a word as "Mawk"? If there is then it was Mawk.
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, one of my favourite classic songs I play it when I'm in a reflective mood, also having that at my funeral. Talking of which, went to a good friends funeral today, exit music was 'Wish You Were Here' Pink Floyd. Sometimes It's appropriate to play a particular type of music, and I smiled when I left.
R.I.P Phillip

Some great posts — not that I’m pro Monarchy but Phillip seem to stand out amongst the rest for many things. Not to mention his war time contribution and his efforts in healthcare and the environment. Ok there’s always going to be knockers of the royals but broadly speaking he had his heart in the right place and deserves a good send off.

Whilst I'm an anti-royalist I didn't have anything against him, nor do I have anything in particular against the Queen for that matter.

But I do find the fawning over him a bit much if I'm honest.
I think we all get that, but it doesn't need post after post stating by the same people. I replied to Boromart above but it could have been anyone of many posters on here. Some intelligent people have let themselves down today.

I wouldn't go as far as say it's sad news. We're all going to die and living to 99 is a great innings. RIP thought to the man.

I think people are entitled to share their feelings, the Royal family are very much within the fabric of public life. I very much disagree that anyone who has respectfully given a view that is maybe anti-royalist has 'let themselves down'.

I don't condone anything that is disrespectful, but equally everyone should be allowed a voice on the fundamental validity of monarchy, including now.

Should that validity be aired on a thread that was meant to show respect for the passing of someone. I agree with what you are saying but there is a time and a place.

free country mate, but you are welcome to keep your thoughts to yourself too.

I've given a balanced view, I feel empathy for the family, they're still people. I respect everyone's right to feel grief if they choose, but I won't accept the whitewashing of him as some saintly human by the media. He didn't make gaffs, he repeatedly said racist and misogynistic things right through his life. With the evidence out there that seems a good balanced view. I'm not buying into the 'cancel culture' of his character as being saintly.
