Review of the Game

The second goal, I’m sorry but Steffen needs to do better. He seems to just fall down and then pushes it back into the middle. He’s too casual at times and although an upgrade on last season, if that was Lumley, he’d better getting slaughtered right now. He’s got to be better.

We have looked great in pocession for long periods of all 4 league games so far this season, but have only taken 3 points.
Joint highest scorers (we should of had even more), yet joint worst defence (we could of conceded more).
How do we fix this? Personally I don't think our back 3 will get us into the top 6 unless we start scoring goals for fun like Fulham last season. And as it stands, that is not going to happen with the strikers at our dispossal.
I believe we need McNair & Fry both in the back line. Hopefully this would tighten us up. For what our preferred current back 3 add going forward, would this be a massive sacrifice?
The keeper still has to prove himself too. Teams have already realised that they need to put the ball on top of him at every possible oppotunity.
With the (hopefully) 4 extra quality additions, I still believe we'll push for a top 6 postion at the end of the season!

I think it's tricky with the subs now. Five subs is massive. Not one but two more players you can bring on. Managers are still trying to suss out what this means. I think it's the biggest rule change in terms of how it impacts play since the backpass rule in the 90s.

At the end of the game they had four subs on, all attacking players I think I'm right in saying. At the end we had three defenders on there who had played 90 against a bunch of fresh attackers.

It's much harder to close a game out now. You could be coasting 2 nil, then the opposition brings on 4 players or even five and it's a completely different game. Do you stick with the players who are doing well or do you bring on fresh legs.

I would have probably brought crooks on for mcgree as I'd be loath to get too defensive and sit back. Bringing fry on for djiksteel or Bola - a bit of height in the box and most importantly a fresh player - and maybes even Smith for Jones would probably have been a good move.

In seasons past I've always said spend your money on the first xi have a few utility players and rely on the kids.
Now I think it's spend your money on a first 16. Then add a couple of utility players and the kids.

We really need a centreback and a midfielder I think. More so than a striker.
This.

At QPR, they emptied their bench to neutralize us and last night Stoke piled attackers on to push. I know we have a thin squad but Wilder has used subs exactly the same as he would have done last season, we need to adapt.

He acknowledged it last night but at least one of Smith/Fry should have been on.

Also agree that defenders and midfielders need to be the priority to increase depth. For all the moans about strikers, we have scored 8 and 5 of those goals have been scored by them, I think one quality addition would be fine.

Felt like a defeat, but you could see it coming the way we tried to see out the last five minutes after having been totally dominant. Not sure keeper and defenders trust each other yet. We should be using all our subs when trying to see out a game, Wilder has admitted maybe he should have stuck on Fry and Smith.

Away from home, last 10, employ the dark arts.

Of course there will be plenty on here that will complain that we took our foot of the gas and used negative subs if we do that. But oyu know what, I'll put up with the negatives onhere if we come back with 3 points and remind them of a Wednesday night away to stoke.

I always thought a big part of Crooks’ game last season was, for want of a better expression, picking up Jones‘ defensive lapses… he always seemed to be there to pick up the pieces and that, perhaps in part contributed to his disciplinary record - trying to be in two places at once? i could be wrong - I usually am - but I think that has been evident without an in form / present Crooks so far.
