Review of the Game

Howson was class and set the tone for a dominating performance. Mowatt brings that cultured left foot in the middle of the park and played some really intelligent passes, good player. McNair probably the most quiet out of the midfielder’s but still played his part. McGree Giles and Jones were menaces all night and it was a huge shame when Watmore had to go off at his usual time.

Onto the defence, a much better over all display and I will put no blame at all onto them for
The first goal, it is purely the referees fault. Second goal, Dijksteel and Jones have shown again when the pressure is on the fold a bit and lack that communication and it’s resulted in a robbery tonight

That game was as one sided as it comes and we’re all hurting so much due to how good we were and the fact we can’t see a game out. Fry Should of came on for McGree and we should of tried to see the game out. Wilder has recognised he made a mistake tonight with his subs and it’s good to see him acknowledge that.

Move on to Saturday now and do it all again. It’s gonna be fun and stressful watching us this season.

Agree with most of this but I think defensively Jones was a bit of a liability, you can tell he’s a winger playing at wing back. Hopefully gets back to his best soon.

Agreed, we battered them for the majority of the match and it's only through a combination of poor finishing, dodgy refereeing and lazy marking that they were able to snatch an undeserved point.

I feel gutted tonight because we deserved to win, but the performance was largely really entertaining.

I thought we were much better in midfield without crooks
Crooks scores goals though, lots of them - if McGree could score he’d be brilliant as a number ten because he makes great runs but his finishing just isn’t there. Mowatt Howson and Crooks, who links very well with Jones, would offer solidity and a threat offensively. Add in two good forwards and we would be very very effective, as long as we sort out those three centre back positions, which to me is the weak link at the moment. That can sorted greatly by putting McNair back in there ( who definitely isn’t a midfielder ) alongside Fry.

Agree with all of that. Good summary 👍

It's alright saying that the 1st goal was a foul but we were in a position where if that tackle had been made cleanly (and it wasn't far away) then we'd have definitely conceded a fair goal. We can't be in a position where one tackle 70 yards from our goal leads to a certain goal because there will be plenty of times where good defenders get the better of our attackers.

If he'd got the ball cleanly with that tackle, it would have went out of play for a throw-in.

As it was, he didn't even touch the ball.

I think it's tricky with the subs now. Five subs is massive. Not one but two more players you can bring on. Managers are still trying to suss out what this means. I think it's the biggest rule change in terms of how it impacts play since the backpass rule in the 90s.

At the end of the game they had four subs on, all attacking players I think I'm right in saying. At the end we had three defenders on there who had played 90 against a bunch of fresh attackers.

It's much harder to close a game out now. You could be coasting 2 nil, then the opposition brings on 4 players or even five and it's a completely different game. Do you stick with the players who are doing well or do you bring on fresh legs.

I would have probably brought crooks on for mcgree as I'd be loath to get too defensive and sit back. Bringing fry on for djiksteel or Bola - a bit of height in the box and most importantly a fresh player - and maybes even Smith for Jones would probably have been a good move.

In seasons past I've always said spend your money on the first xi have a few utility players and rely on the kids.
Now I think it's spend your money on a first 16. Then add a couple of utility players and the kids.

We really need a centreback and a midfielder I think. More so than a striker.

You know what I mean. I don't mean the exact situation that played out. I'm talking about in general if the defender takes the ball legitimately or Jones makes a mistake and loses it 70 yards from goal then it shouldn't be a certain goal. If we have the ball up that side of the pitch then the opposite wing back and CB has to be covering better and/or Howson needs to be giving some protection.

I think the key is when we are getting lots of players in advanced positions, then the safe ball is not sometimes backwards or sideways but forwards.
But yeah some of it is just basic positional defending.

That is why we need Fry to play right centre half. Dijksteel is not good enough to cover Jones for 90 minutes.

never seems to be any players with cultured right feet

Howson is the defensive midfielder in the worst defence in the league. As tidy as he is on the ball he’s a defensive liability particularly away from home.

Would’ve got nowhere near the team in that Karanka promotion side that could defend.

I think Giles and Jones are abit of a liability defensively, that’s why we need a good solid back 3 with probably howson sat in from. He really is the rolls Royce at the minute.
I don’t mind that with Giles and Jones though, that’s where a lot of the goals will come from.
For me, paddy plays his best football for us in defence. He done ok tonight but he had all of the time on the world.
Even with the thin squad we already have a problem - once howson a name is on the team sheet then how do we get McGree, crooks and mowatt in, or who do we play. They’re all good midfielders and will all offer goals. It’s a positive for sure.

Just this. What Giles and Jones bring to attack is unquestionable but both have been responsible for some awful defending for some of the goals we've conceded this season. Last night Jones stood motionless (along with Dijksteel) as they give the shortest player on the pitch yards of space for an unchallenged equaliser in added time. Tackling isn't either one's strong point and Jones is frequently cheaply dispossessed. If we're going to defend like that we'll have to start converting a lot more of the chances they create.

I thought we were much better in midfield without crooks
As a forward looking team with the ball maybe, defensively the midfield out of possession was awol or ineffective for both their goals. The question for me is whether that is due to players not doing their job or tactically the manager overloading the attack too much at times. I think if Crooks was on the pitch he would possibly have been in a better position to deal with the first when Izzy was fouled and they broke. All ifs and buts and maybe‘s mind.

That was probably the most dominant I have ever seen us away from home in the league ever, the worry is we still found a way to concede 2 goals. Great to watch but we are arguably too open in doing so. Albeit a different style the overall effect reminds me of Keegans Newcastle.

We are on the right lines, hopefully the 4 still to come provide the solidity and stability we need to add the icing to the cake.
