Revealed: the millionaires hoarding UK fishing rights

More than a quarter of the United Kingdom’s fishing quota is in the hands of a tiny group of the country’s wealthiest families, an Unearthed investigation has found.

Just five families on the Sunday Times Rich List hold or control 29% of the UK’s fishing quota.

The finding comes from a new Unearthed investigation that traced the owners of more than 95% of UK quota holdings – including, for the first time, those of Scotland, the UK’s biggest fishing nation.

It reveals that more than two-thirds of the UK’s fishing quota is controlled by just 25 businesses – and more than half of those are linked to one of the biggest criminal overfishing scams ever to reach the British courts.

The last UK registered fishing boat I was on, chartered in to help on a survey, only had a British Captain, the rest of the crew were East European and Filipino. The owner had flown home from his yacht in the Mediterranean to have a meeting with us.

It’s been bugging me why the government have been making such a song and dance over fishing when the thousands who could possibly lose their jobs as a result of Brexit are ignored.Bingo!! It’s not a for or against Brexit thing it’s just in the scheme of things who hasn’t thought “What’s so bluddy important about fishing”?

Yesterday Johnson said it was one of the red lines voted for by the people. So it's not the Tories, the Tory manifesto but the people's will.

The answer is "nothing" but it's the only thing we've got as bargaining leverage. Using everyone's favourite poker analogy it's the only actual playing card in amongst a load of Jokers. It also plays well politically with all the little Englanders who seem to imagine we've got whole fleets of crewed up fishing boats all ready to go.

Haven't a lot of UK fishermen sold their quotas rights to foreign fishermen? I have seen them advertised in some specialist publications- that was some time ago though.

Yes they did but more importantly the vast majority of their catch is sold on the continent anyway. No matter how many cooking programmes people in the UK watch, at the end of the day they only want to buy cod.

No we don't. We buy what's available to us in the supermarket, we don't make the choice. If you have a local wet fish shop you're lucky. Some fish and chip shops had wet fish counters at one time, haven't seen one for ages.

Did some work out of the Shetlands. It's a very open secret that their whole economy is based on 'Black Fish' fish that are caught and sold outside of the quota system. Multi-million pounds vessels operate on quota figures that are a fraction of what would be needed to buy and operate the vessels. The industry is mafialike.
Fishing rights was a flag waver for Boris and Fargae etc that appealed to al the little Englanders out there.
Being held to ransom over this is just another Brexit disgrace to add to the list.

That's as much to do with a lack of education in schools as much as anything else.

It's absolutely tragic that basic skills that adults need to survive in the big wide world are not taught more in schools.

Of course Cod is going to be one the most popular fish dishes in this country when school leavers lack basic cooking knowledge and are quite content to visit a maccy D's or a chippy or live off cheap and cheerful one step meals out of the supermarket.

Supply and demand. Cod is a boring fish to cook with at the best of times, try some Turbot (expensive yes) or black bream. Heck even seabass is a great alternative to cod and takes minutes to cook.

I've found this link an inspiration in the past when looking for recipe ideas to try at home using sustainable UK stock.

So why are they complaining about foreign fishing boats in British waters when they sold them the rights to do so? I understand that 70% of fish caught in British waters is processed in Europe. And you are right about the cod- so what on earth are they whingeing about?

Exactly my point.

Our mums and dads were taught home economics in school and their parents also taught them a great deal too.
Distinctly lacking in young adults these days.

Personally I try to engage my children with cooking by letting them help to make lunch and parts of tea. As they get older hopefully they will want to stay involved and learn more

"Taking back control".

My mum was never taught home economics, she once put sugar in penacelty. Her fadgies were copyrighted by Barretts.

Her attitude to any foreign food was I am not eating that muck

Her basic ingredients always included Lard.

A very forward looking woman my mam .
