Raw Sewage in our rivers

Happening all over the country. When questioned about it on twitter, they claim they are not voting for that, but instead voting to ensure that sewerage doesn't back up into our houses. They ignore any questions about supplies of chemicals for sewerage treatment works, and problems with supply chain caused by brexit......as you would expect. Full on Orwellian crap

its the privatisation collapse - theyve took their shillings - now its time to hand it back for the tax payer to pick up the tab.

railways - kaputt

gas - kaputt

water - kaputt

if you see Sid or Beattie, tell 'em !!
This isn't that. This is a clear brexit failure. It's also another instance of the gorvernemnt doing something nasty and dangerous to hide that brexit failure

As ST says it's definitely a Brexit related problem that the government failed to plan for yet again. The Water Industry were warning about chemicals quite some time ago.

Under normal circumstances sewage should only be diverted into rivers and the sea under storm conditions. These are closely monitored by the EA and companies are consented.

If you are asking your MP why they allowed it to happen and they give that excuse, ask them why 22 of their colleagues felt able to rebel against the whip.

Some of them are now screaming they are being abused to avoid answering when questioned about this too on twitter.

strangely my local Tory, the porn watcher, did not vote for this. It's the first time I can recall him rebelling against the party line, ever. But then Southern water are a political hot potato down here
People seem to have forgotten just how rotten, polluted and dangerous to health our shorelines were in the 70s and early 80s until we were forced to clean it up by those pesky european laws giving us world class beaches that no one asked for.

Honest Q (and for once following that phrase it is...) is it actually brexit related?
In 2018 the worry was about delays to importing chemicals to purify drinking water rather than those that treat sewage.
Does that mean that the supply chain for the chemicals to purify drinking water is actually more robust, or are they the same chemicals & drinking water is being prioritised, or indeed is drinking water the next thing to be sacrificed on the altar of 'taking back control'?

The mealy-mouthed defence seems to be that MPs are forcing water companies to come up with a 'robust' plan on investing in infrastructure by September 2022.

So another 10 months for water companies to carry on as they see fit before MPs scrutinise the plan and sign it off - which due to events - is likely to be kicked along the Parliamentary schedule by more weeks and months.

I wonder how many Tory MPs have connections with the major water companies?

Well, the first thing you'd ask is, why is there a problem then?

We're 7 weeks on from when the government explicitly told water companies that they could dump sewage into our waters. You'd think that something would've been sorted by now.
