Don’t know if this as already been discussed.

Is Rangers getting to the Europa League Final a big achievement than when the Boro got to the final.
 
In terms of finances and the opposition, probably.

There was only really Roma that were at parity with us in our run.

Rangers have beaten 3 richer sides from better leagues than them so far.

But Rangers are a much bigger club than us, so ours would be more notable, despite their disadvantages.

I think it most certainly is a bigger achievement for them.
They have lesser resources than we had comparatively then.
They also have a significantly poorer team than we had then and no better than ours now.
They do have legions more fans, but play in a league way below the PL in terms of competitiveness.

Rangers under Souness and Smith were a very very good team capable of doing pretty well in the PL. They are nothing like that standard now.
I am stunned and delighted they have made the final this year, it is unbelievable really.
Hats off to GvB, they are better off without Gerrard.
 
I was surprised and impressed to see them get there.

However, they also got there in 2007/08 so maybe we shouldn't be surprised?

Obviously the resources at their disposal in Scotland makes it tougher.
I do wonder if the weakness of the SPL offers some advantage too though: maybe there are some league matches where you can rest half your team, be confident of a win, and prepare for Europe?

Gers were much bigger/more competitive in 07 than now.
You make a good point about pressure on players in lesser leagues, but overall I still think playing in the Scottish or Belgian or Portuguese league is massively down on the PL and playing in it is a disadvantage.

It's a great achievement, but it's a no from me.

Rangers play in europe almost every year, their players build up a bank of european experience and they have had 57 seasons of european football, we were in our second.

I'd agree. But I also think that Dortmund have a better team than them now.

It didn't stop Rangers beating them. Such is the nature of knock out football.

It's fair comment that the SPL is less competitive now than 15 years ago. One of them used to make the CL group stages regularly and it's a rarity now.

Fair enough, but although accurate, "from Div 3" is a bit misleading given the context. It isn't like Falkirk or Montrose have done it.

Our achievement in 20 yrs from 86 to 06 was more impressive.

"In 86 we nearly died......etc" 🙂
 
Agreed, the "new club" thing is technically true, but entirely misleading.

Rangers must have had dozens of seasons of European football; they've reached the Uefa final before and (I think) won the old cup winner's cup. They have a substantial European pedigree.
I therefore don't see them as the bolt from the blue that we were, but I don't know that that is relevant to the issue of "achievement" in the context of the modern game.
 
I think Boro getting to a major European final is probably bigger as we've had no history of it. Rangers are a massive club who have played in European competitions throughout their history.

That said, I think the Boro team of 2006 was far better than the current Rangers side, so perhaps that levels it out a bit.
