Rangers defender Jack Simpson wanted by Middlesbrough

Rangers defender Jack Simpson could be on his way out of Ibrox in January, with Middlesbrough reportedly keen to sign him.

According to reports from The Scottish Sun, Boro are set to offer a loan deal for the 25-year-old.

Simpson is out-of-favour at Ibrox, and Rangers have told him that he can leave in January if there’s a good offer on the table.

Sensible

Simpson joined from AFC Bournemouth in the January window of 2021, signed by Steven Gerrard.

He has managed only 11 appearances for the Scottish champions and didn’t really meet the standards expected of him.

His career at Rangers has stalled, and a move away from Ibrox will do a world of good for him.

He has started just two games this season, and the Gers are more than happy to let him go. Boro boss Chris Wilder is an admirer of the defender, and a move away from Ibrox is on the cards.

Ideally, Rangers would want him to leave permanently, but even a loan move wouldn’t be a bad scenario.

His potential departure would free up the wages and space for any new arrival. It’s a sensible move for all parties involved.

Rangers are reportedly looking to make defensive reinforcements despite signing James Sands, with Connor Goldson’s long-term future remaining up in the air.

According to Transfermarkt he's a left-footed centre back. Played a few times for Bournemouth in the Championship and the odd Premier league game. At 25 years old he ought to be in the prime of his career but he has hardly played for 3 years. Possibly a reasonable back-up for left centre back position if McNair needs to go into midfield.
If he comes in on loan that's (counting Balogun) 6 loans in; implies that we're going to end the loan of at least 1 player or not be able to put them all in the same team.

his career has never really got going. was understudy to ake, mings etc with us for ages, played a few times, but was never going to get in the first team at the time. the rangers move was a strange one, but he just needed to get some first team football, which hasn't happened. hard to rate him really - never done anything wrong, good footballing centre-back, tall, strong(ish). not amazing... fairly average on evidence so far seen..... but with possible potential. worth a gamble I'd say!

wilder does seem to fancy "footballing" defenders, so would suit in that sense......

Cant help thinking we should be setting our ambitions a bit higher than a Scottish league player who cant get in their team. We are in with a reasonable chance of PL next season. Someone should be selling our club to the Payeros and better of this world

I'm dubious as to how much he would improve us and I'm not keen on the tactic of making loads of loan signings. Whatever happens next year we'll end up significantly weaker as a result of that and it seems odd to use a loan space on a squad/backup player anyway.

It's a no from me, Clive.

If he’s a footballing centre back who can play abit he’s probably not in the right league playing In scotland.

“QPR and Middlesbrough keeping tabs on Rangers centre-back

Rangers centre-back Jack Simpson has attracted interest from Championship clubs who are willing to bring him back to England.
The 24-year-old arrived at Ibrox last season but has fallen behind Calvin Bassey in the pecking order and has made four appearances this season.
QPR are looking at him to bolster their backline for the second half of the season, and he is also on the radar of Chris Wilder at Middlesbrough. Swansea are also monitoring him as clubs wait to find out whether he will be allowed to leave next month.”

It’s not that bad.

Rangers and Celtic are top end championship level, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen probably lower championship with the rest league 1 ish.
Yea I think my opinion has been clouded by Gordon Strachan and all those terrible signings from North of the border.

Celtic and rangers might scrape top 6 in champo.

"A product of Bournemouth’s Academy, Simpson made his debut for then-manager Eddie Howe’s side in a 3-1 EFL Cup win over Middlesbrough in October 2017 – a game in which he opened the scoring."

If he's not good enough for Rangers then it's a no thanks from me, still if he comes, I guess he has to be given a chance. Wilder has not steered us far wrong as yet.

All this nonsense about "hes only played...blah blah".
We`ve bought players like Fletcher, Getsede, Saville, Ackpom and Assombalonga - the majority had been playing regularly before we bought them - collectively they were average - every one of them, and they cost a bluddy fortune. I trust wilder`s judgement - the player has got abillty - a blank canvass is a good start for Wilder, instead of the splattered parchment weve bought in the last ten years.
