Just thought I'd share this - Something that happened to my partner on Sunday.
She was travelling from Newcastle to Donny on the Edinburgh to Kings X train.
She sat at a table seat opposite a family of 4 (older mother, father and 2, 20 something offspring)
After a while, they started saying (amongst themselves) stuff like... "Have you seen the blackness outside" "Have you seen the taint - it will spread", is this the Black zone" and other blatant innuendos as well as comments about "F****** migrants. Also, the father opened a magazine, which had a picture of a black guy and deliberately turned it towards my partner - leaving the page open.
There were other people in the carriage who looked a bit concerned but didn't say anything.
After a while my partner moved to a different carriage fearing that it could turn into something more sinister.
She sat next to a young guy who noticed that she was flustered and he asked if she was ok - she told him the story and he told her that he actually worked for LNER - after alerting one of the on duty staff and a mini conference - they offered to get the transport police to pick them up at York - she declined and they got off at York anyway. They said that she can report a racist incident within one week - With very little chance of any sort of a conviction, she's decided not to pursue it, fearing that it could open a can of worms.
Just thought I'd share this because a lot of people don't know what Racism looks like - it's not a skinhead screaming obscenities in your face but more often subtle and psychological.
My partner said that the LNER staff were super helpful, offered to escort her home etc....fortunately, I was picking her up at Donny station. I'm sure that if I'd have been with her it would'nt have happened.
