Racist Incident

Just thought I'd share this - Something that happened to my partner on Sunday.

She was travelling from Newcastle to Donny on the Edinburgh to Kings X train.

She sat at a table seat opposite a family of 4 (older mother, father and 2, 20 something offspring)

After a while, they started saying (amongst themselves) stuff like... "Have you seen the blackness outside" "Have you seen the taint - it will spread", is this the Black zone" and other blatant innuendos as well as comments about "F****** migrants. Also, the father opened a magazine, which had a picture of a black guy and deliberately turned it towards my partner - leaving the page open.

There were other people in the carriage who looked a bit concerned but didn't say anything.

After a while my partner moved to a different carriage fearing that it could turn into something more sinister.

She sat next to a young guy who noticed that she was flustered and he asked if she was ok - she told him the story and he told her that he actually worked for LNER - after alerting one of the on duty staff and a mini conference - they offered to get the transport police to pick them up at York - she declined and they got off at York anyway. They said that she can report a racist incident within one week - With very little chance of any sort of a conviction, she's decided not to pursue it, fearing that it could open a can of worms.

Just thought I'd share this because a lot of people don't know what Racism looks like - it's not a skinhead screaming obscenities in your face but more often subtle and psychological.

My partner said that the LNER staff were super helpful, offered to escort her home etc....fortunately, I was picking her up at Donny station. I'm sure that if I'd have been with her it would'nt have happened.

I hope your partner isn’t effected too much about what happened. Makes me sad that it happened

An absolute disgrace and a shame no one said anything.

I hope if I found myself observing that I’d have the guts to speak up, but easier said than do when posting on here

Some people are fundamentally inadequate and try to make up for the howling chasm in their sad little lives by trying to demean and belittle others.
Sounds like your partner handled the situation with a great deal of grace though.

It's tough to say anything when it's being done in a subtle way. I do find it hard to contain myself in these situations and that's just as bad

It always concerns me when people do not step in on instances like this. Especially since the other passengers appear to have noticed it. A female passenger on her own, facing abhorrent behavior. Bunch of no marks.

Really hate this stuff. I have challenged this sort of behaviour in the past with the public and ‘family’ and will continue to do so. Told my father in law to get out of my house a few years ago because of the stuff he was coming out with. Hope your partner isn’t feeling too bad about the incident and understands they are a fantastic human being.

Sadly the rise of "leaders" like Trump and Johnson (and all the rhetoric about Brexit) have enabled scum like this to feel that this is acceptable behavior. Your partner did exactly the right thing but sadly the Neanderthals will see it as a victory.

As an aside, if you're ever a witness to a situation like this and feel that you can't tackle the offender(s) directly, then going over to the victim and chatting to them is a very good way of supporting them.

I could feel the anger in me rising while reading that…

your partner should not have had to suffer that…

I feel deep down that If I’d have heard it I’d have wanted to say something. What’s worse is your partner didnt feel confident enough that if she complained anything would be done about it… if only someone else had had the conviction of backing her up to give her that confidence…

I hope she is not affected too badly by it, there are more of us that are not like this than there are scum like that 😞

I remember my previous generation was much more racist, but put it down to poor education and lack of opportunities in the past. This would be the time of the Windrush generation, who were not universally welcomed with open arms by many in the community, but my word did those Caribbean men, women and children save this nation from the effects of war. We should celebrate Windrush in a much more deserving way and only now have politicians recognised the invaluable contribution these "Immigrants", nay citizens, made to the UK. We could not have survived, as we have done, without them.
