Probably the biggest iconic legend in our history

John Hickton, signed for the mighty Boro on the evening of Friday, September 23rd, 1966 the day before the game v Workington
Secretary Harry Green drove to his home in Chesterfield to complete the signing, apparently other clubs were in for him but Harry got in first, well done Harry, we are forever in your debt

Why?
Hickton a very significant figure, but really not the biggest iconic legend.
Camsell, Mannion, Hardwick, Clough, Souness and Juninho are all more significant figures to me.
We all have our favourites, the problem is when people get definitive.
He is not just a favourite he was 'Mr Middlesbrough' as Erimus rightly calls him. He gave so much to the club on and off the field - a firm fans favourite throughout the 60's and 70's.

I even chose my Confirmation name as John (John the Baptist) in honour of him. ;) (y)

I get it, he is your favourite and will be for some others, but to call him Mr Middlesbrough is definitive and he is not nearly that in my mind, not even close.
Brian Clough scored way more goals in half the matches, whilst playing alongside Peacock who was more prolific than Hickton anyway in terms of goals per game. Both Boro lads too. They are just two who are more significant in my mind.
All of them were in the second division; we have had top flight superstars in different eras too.

We all have favourites, not all the same.

Well, this 49 year old man can thank John Hickton for the fact that his Dad decided to name him John.

Some of you could start an argument in an empty room😂. Erimus did say probably! For me Mr Middlesbrough will always be Tony Mowbray....it's all a matter of opinion.

Perhaps the op or someone else can put up a new thread with a poll and we can decide once and for all :p
