People who use speakerphone in public

What are they doing? Why, why, WHY are you doing this? I’m in the local for a pint and a read and there’s a man on the table next to me listening to music and videos, flagrantly, full volume, no earphones or headphones.

It’s been getting worse over the past few years, I blame Apple in some ways for designing phones without earphone jacks, but when did this behaviour become just accepted? It’s something that, honestly, makes me feel so, so, so angry. Why do they do this.

Living and travelling around London I find its prevalent amongst tourists - it must be a thing in Italy and Spain for example. Lack of self awareness around them. Its the same with people talking loudly on phones on trains so you have to endure their whole conversation - hate that.

I'm blaming Alan Sugar. He's done loads of terrible things but The Apprentice helped start the trend for people towards people talking at their mobiles rather than treating them like a normal phone.

It's always phone guy business conversations you overhear. Just once I'd like to hear someone shouting down their phone " yeah it hurts when I pee. Blood has started to come out of it and there's scabs and a weird smell."

Travelling back from Aberdeen a few weeks ago some bloke was ridiculously loud on a Teams Meeting. Another person approach him and told him straight you are being very loud and can you keep it down. It worked too!

For people with poor hearing it's a necessity not a choice - smart phones have made it worse, because they are touch sensitive unlike earlier phones and as said the manufacturers have phased out jacks.

I’m sure I’ve told this story before. It was in the late 1990s.

An examining friend of mine was travelling back from London to Newcastle sitting opposite a bloke who was using his newly bought mobile phone and loudly having conversation after conversation with folk telling them about said new phone. Adrian, my friend, was trying to read so after about 20 minutes of listening to him retell the same story to numerous folk, Adrian started to read his book out loud, complete with different voices for the various characters. Without any hint of irony, the man having the conversations asked him to shut up. Needless to say, Adrian carried on, until conversation man moved seats.

How is it a necessity?? The 'proper' earpiece speaker is much clearer than the speaker(s) for voice audio, it also blocks out more background noise.

No, it's not. They can choose not to use the phone in the earshot of others.

My dads hard of hearing. Don't think he's ever used speakerphone. you can get bluetooth hearing aids. Or just use a converter if you need to plug in a wired headset.
